I bought a Stag, the engine was out. I was told the crankshaft had 'gone' - it was, it was missing! But also the block has two of the main bearing caps broken in half. Is there any point in keeping this block? I don't need it as I have a couple of spare engines but I'd be loathe to weigh it in for scrap if it would be of use to anyone.

I had a couple of main bearing caps break on my first Stag engine, it was a reconditioned short block from a major supplier. I happened to have a set of extra main bearing caps that came in a box with a pair of heads I bought to complete the engine.
I managed, with a few hours of welding and filing, to make two of these fit without removing the engine from the car.
I would not recommend doing this, but it shows it is possible.
To get the job done properly would probably cost more than the block is worth, blocks come up on ebay quite regularly and don't go for a lot of money so it is probably only worth its weight in scrap.

Cheers,
Mike.I just saw the pic some time ago, either on Ebay or on here, and saved it as another thing to go on my 'Want' list
I'm getting close to finishing my garage now and installed my electric hardtop hoist the other day. Maybe when it's finally finished I'll put something on here - together with a request for a final 'ornament' - (not a block)
Cheers
