    Expansion bottle coolant level.

    Hi guys and gals,

The coolant level in the expansion bottle of my car never seems to go up or down once the car is up to operating temperature, and the top hose is rock hard. New expansion bottle with 20lb cap, no loss of coolant, and the temp gauge always remains steady just on or slightly below the halfway mark. I have flushed and refilled the system, including back-flushing the rad. Thoughts and advice please? Or is all as it should be and I am suffering from Stag paranoia?

    Thom.

      Stag paranoia.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

If the level does not go up from cold to hot then there must be a blockage in the tube somewhere between rad and bottle. My friends Dolly sprint had a complete blockage in the plastic header tank inlet. Might be the same in this case?

I would suggest that the radiator is not completely full
so that when expansion occurs the water has no need to travel to the bottle

          simpleeessssss

In which case, all the expansion space is in the Rad......Bottle redundancy.

Thanks for all your replies peeps, looks like Chris wins the coconut. Disconnected the rubber hose to the expansion bottle and tried shoving a length of stiff wire up the metal pipe on the radiator. Managed to get it up and round the bend but wouldn’t go any further. Also looks and like there is a weld in the pipe just under the top radiator spigot. Now looking for a radiator repair place in my area.
