Well, if it does need a good bit of welding and suchlike then I'd say go the whole hog and strip it completely and get it sorted once and for all. Provided you can afford it and have the patience to see it through...

I think many on here would tear down and do a full nut n bolt build, if time and finances allowed. Be it media blast, thermal or dip n strip.
But I would recommend driving a while and get all mechanicals right, satisfy yourself you have a sound engine and gear train. Then having been bitten wholesale by the burble bug then dig in with your goal firmly established.
Some even get a second stag to drive whilst the main project is under way.
