Inhibitor switch automatic gearbox type 35

    Dear all,
Starting up my Stag 1975 in P sounds as if the battery is almost empty. In N it works OK.
I am told that it's almost certain that the inhibitor switch on the gearbox broke down. It's a type 35 automatic gearbox. I think I have to replace the switch.
According to my manual I have to empty the cooling system and losen the upper hose. Then take off front parts of the exhaust, take off the propshaft, undo the screws from the lower mounting bracket and lower motor and transmission a good deal so I can reach the switch.
You can guess my question: is there an easier way to change the switch. Is it possible to remove the gearbox console so that I can remove the carpet and reach the switch from above?
And: has anyone made pictures of such a job?
I hope someone has some answers.

    Harrie,

There should be an access hole in the transmission tunnel in the left hand side footwell below the heater box. Lift the carpet, undo the screws and then you can get to the switch. If it works reliably in "N" then it is possible that it just requires some slight adjustment to get it working in "P" again.

    Good Luck

Access panel on passemger (left) side of transmission tunnel.

Remove carpet from side of tunnel close to gearchange. If necessary; make the hole larger and cut a new (bigger) cover when you've finished.

Changed through transmission tunnel inspection plate. The switch is right there behind it. My thread with pictures, but there is much more info in the archives too:

Already thanks for the answers and suggestions. I take the way from above. Do I have to remove the console or can I reach just by pulling up the carpet?

Too quick in my reaction. I pulled up the carpet and removed only 4 screws to open the hole in the tunnel. Room enough to adjust or even change the switch. Thanks to Roger I will try to adjust first.
