    Original reg number

I bought a stag last year and the car came with a heritage certificate which showed the original registration number. The car now shows a different number.

I'm not considering trying to get the original number back on the car. I'm not sure if this could be done? Not sure where to start? Maybe the club can help? Has anyone experienced said task? Or just give me any ideas on where to start.

I contacted The DVLA to ask if I could buy the original number and was politely told that this could not be done.

    Thanks in anticipation.

Is the original reg number still in use. Askmid is one place where you might find if it is fitted to a car that is insured. If it is fitted to another vehicle then you are out of luck.

My Dad reimported an early Range Rover a few months back and re-registered it, despite DVLA incompetence . He was pleasantly surprised to have the original number reissued to it. They can do it I guess

Good news. Checked on askmid and confirmed the the number isn't insured. Might try the club to help or advise me.

I have moved reg numbers from car to car numerous times. I always get the original number of the car back, as DVLA reserve it to the car.
Don't know if this would be the case if the number was swaped years ago, but it's possible.

In the old days of cherished transfers a different number was issued to the car after removal of cherished number and often was not age related ie originally an H reg may get a M if that was the year letter being issued at the time, as often year of reg on V5 is incorrect as had plate change or was put on DVLA computer many years after first reg. The usual acceptance now is the original plate is returned to the car even though they once asked you on application form if you wanted to retain it and made a small charge. Write to DVLA and ask for cars reg history and they should send Photostats of V5's with all details of owners etc . They do charge but not much. Dave
