    Stag petrol consumption

    Hello everybody,

I know you work these things out differently in the UK, but my Stag (with the original TV8 engine, but SU HIF6 carbs) consumes about 13 litres per 100 km on country roads with moderate driving. Some of my friends say, this is too much for this type of engine.

    What do you think?

I do not want to tune the carbs more towards "meagre" to prevent overheating.

    Best wishes,
    Dieter - from Germany.

That works out just under 22 mpg which seems a little low i.e. high consumption but not too bad for an auto.
I get about 25 mpg on average with a ZF box.

Not to be flippant or unhelpful, not an advert either, but irresistible all the same.

Mine uses NONE, not a drop

Mine is a 3 Speed Auto and uses 17 mpg! I'll swap you, Dieter. I suspect the carbs are on their way out.

Boy. I must drive like a real dork! I recently got 34 mpg on a trip to the cotswolds, in an auto with a 3.4 diff and webber carb! Methinks the speedo might be a bit out.

Dieter, I can easily get 30mpg and it always runs cool.

What are the colour of the spark plugs?

That should give an indication of whether it's running too rich.

Blimey, I should use my Stag more for work - I have a BMW X6 diesel that doesn't normally reach that! I've never yet worked it out for the Stag.

Interesting point about the speedo though for distance travelled, I have original 185R14 tyres on steel wheels and I've noticed the speedo is spot on against the sat nav, not even a 10% variance like on modern cars. .... I suppose it also depends on the accuracy of the sat nav having said that...

That seems pretty low at 22 mpg. I've been getting a very constant 31 mpg for the last year of 90% mainly high speed motorway driving and 10% of motorway queuing for the year's total mileage of 17,020.

                      Dieter,

You don't say what gearbox you have. Big difference between original 3-speed auto (of either type) and the MOD box.

My old MOD would average mid 20's and achieve 30-ish on a run. My current Stag with the BW35 would manage 18 around town and 24 on a run. With the ZF I'm now on 24 around town and 30-ish on a run.

So if yours is a 3-speed auto, then you are probably not far out.

I've just done 2000 miles in mine on the Round Britain Reliability run and it averaged 24mpg using the Sat Nav mileage and frequent top ups to check the fuel consumption, best on the journey was 26mpg which was on motorway driving whilst the worst was 22mpg which was through the Welsh mountains. Mine is a TV8(Favershams build) mated to a BW65 auto box and saloon diff with standard wheels.

Driving around home on short journeys it usually averages 19-20mpg

                          Hello everybody,

Thank you very much for all your input.

Yes, it is a BW35 auto box.

So I reckon I need to have a look at the carb setting and ignition next spring.

                          Best wishes,
                          Dieter.

You folks getting 30+, are you actually going over 50mph?

Had 2 Stags and not got more than 25 and that was doing "Driving Miss Daisy". My current Stag had a 4-barrel Holley for most of the 5 years I've had it, which I think the previous owner had tweaked for racing as it was REALLY thirsty, and I'd have to work to get 22. I've now switched to a Weber-Edelbrock and can tell it's more fuel efficient. Unfortunately I can't tell mpg as I need to replace the speedo. But I'm hoping to be up into those higher 20's on a long run. At more than 50mph!

I get 30 MPG (9.4 L/100km) on a trip. Triumph V8 Manual overdrive with Weber carb. That's cruising at 100-110 Kph. Speed limits are pretty slow down here one would assume you're travelling much faster in Germany??
