    water leaks in motor

Hi, have a mystery water leak in the V of the engine, leaks when cold, once motor is up to near temp, it,s as dry as a bone! Have stripped the intake manifold off, replaced gaskets, plus 'super-never gonna leak, gasket goo, all reassembled, -still leaks! is not the water pump, as no stains there,I am about to strip it all again, but if any of you chaps have experienced this one?..............

Slight unexplained leak in the v is very common.

if it's only slight then I'd live with it - I've done that for the past couple of years !

probably due to erosion of pump face against graphite seal

    Welcome to the Forum btw

    Cheers

Slight unexplained leak into the vee is quite common, especially with header tank fitted. I've got and, if it's only slight, it's usually best to live with it.

Probably due to corrosion of pump face against graphite seal.

      Welcome to the forum btw.

Core plug underside of manifold or still the back slot of the manifold leaking, it doesn't how much "never going to leak goo" you use if the mating faces aren't parallel especially if the bottom gap is bigger than the top.

Just a thought, I'm not sure if this would work?? could you check how well the inlet manifold seats by test seating the manifold with no gaskets, but using a setting gasket compound, and then removing manifold and seeing if the gasket compound thickness is even, if it isn't then manifold mating surfaces would need adjusting. [Flying farmer does this I believe with a long file, or abrasive paper and sheet of glass]

When warm maybe it just evaporates from the hot block so appears to have stopped?

Could come from the thermostat housing, a leak from that gasket finds it way to the vee.

That would be my guess.. Brians was the same new gasket and a clean up sorted it out.

Mine does the same thing - and much more so since the fitting of the header tank.

The leak stops almost totally during the summer, shows up more in winter, and disappears when the engine is warm.

I view it as a "characteristic" rather than a "fault". So........ it "ain't broke".

Edit. Forgot to mention that I have never topped it up, despite the dampness in the V. I reckon a little spilled water looks a whole lot worse than it is. Unless it is inside your watch.

Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

                  Welcome to the Forum Witwot.
I had the same on my Stag. K-Seal cured it. Hope you can get it in NZ.

Ditto with K-seal on my Stag.

Gee, thanks for the helpful replies, Guys, I am gonna add some dye to the system, then pressurize to 15-20 psi. I know I am going to have to strip the motor top off again to get a look, But us retired guys have time.......Oh yeah, this did not leak untill I added a top water tank!
The old gaskets I took off were shocking!-they had slipped while whoever did the job installed them, and were blocking the inlets big time!- Motor runs sweeter now,

Mine also only started after adding a header tank.

Before you pull the manifold off again, why not check how much, if any, coolant you're using.

As I mentioned, I reckon it'll probably be best to live with a small leak.

i used K seal earlier and, although it worked, it was a real bu***r to get it all out later.

                        Cheers
