    Aerial question

New member here. In summary I am having a one owner archetypal "barn find" built for me at present. having owned numerous classics over many years, including a mark one Triumph 2.5 pi, P6 Rover, P5 Rover, Mark 2 Jaguar and many more I have always believed in doing tons of research, buying books and moreover joining the appropriate owners club. So here I am!

The car should be ready in about six to eight weeks. It has been stripped and painted in its original colour of Sapphire Blue (very nice too!). Here is the question albeit a small one. On the windscreen pillar there are small holes where clearly there was an aerial and my question is, would this have been there from the factory? If it was then I'll probably keep the holes and try to locate a genuine aerial. If however there was absolutely no way that the factory would have done this, then I'll have the holes properly filled and will consider another method for an aerial, although I have to confess I am loath to have holes drilled in the rear wing!

Sorry if this seems like a trivial question but I need to ascertain this to make a decision for the Company building it for me.

    Many thanks

    Terry

Welcome to the forum! I have never seen one fitted to the front windscreen pillar, my guess is non-original. They are usually fitted to one of the rear wings.

    Can you post a picture?

    Cheers

In time Keith because the car is not close to hand being at the car workshop!

Agree, most are fitted to the rear wing but I've seen a few on the front wing (looks odd !) but back in the day I think Datsun's had windscreen pillar mounted aerials.

Unless you're going for concourse, when rebuilding I would consider investigating modern 'hidden' aerial - perhaps the width of the car above the windscreen (ie. under the chrome capping). As I'd prefer to avoid cutting an external hole for an aerial, both could be a source of water ingress over time.

Terry. All Stag aerials were fitted by the dealers, not at the factory, and I doubt ever by them on the screen pillar.
Although I have seen them on both rear wings, the best place is on the near side, then the petrol pump won't cause clicking noises on the radio. It should be alongside the boot lid, and just far enough back to allow the part inside the boot to clear the inner wheel arch.
          Mike.

Thanks all thus far. Mike I think you are right and that goes with my gut feeling. Quick phone call the car builder tomorrow to advise them!

            Thanks again

If you do go for an aerial on the rear wing try and source an electric aerial from a Jaguar X300 or X308 model as the retract to an almost flush finish and look so much better than the normal electric aerials.
I have one to go on my stag and took it off of a Jaguar in a breakers yard - I found out about them as my dad has this Jag below with one fitted.

Hi Terry I got an inside aerial that fits to the top of the screen behind the rear veiw mirror from Halfords, works great, is cheap and no holes in the bodywork. Look foward to seeing you out and about as your local to me. Alan

Cheers Alan. Yes indeed we may well see each other. It will be next year now as my Stag will not be ready until maybe the end of this year and whilst I believe in using a car I don't really want to be driving it on the salty rods in the winter

I wouldn't bother with an aerial at all. As far as I'm concerned the only music I want to listen to when driving my Stag is the noise from the exhaust!
