    Drive shaft treatment

Hi Guys, has anybody tried coating their drive shaft splines with a "Hot Bond metal treatment"?, that is applied via an aerosol after heating it to 50 deg's.
"which adds a 0.05 microns of lubricated and protected surface!".

    Just a mad thought.

I currently have grease nipples on my drive shaft splines which works well but not perfect.

The description fits what a bit of grease would do, ie lubricates and protects.

We have used some thing similar on very highly stressed cross pins in an off shore winch application. Very expensive. Time consuming. Awkward. The results........ unimpressive!
The idea was to make service work much more simple as the cross pins regularly seized up and corroded. When we got the winch back for repair the pins were all corroded and jammed. They came out with hot spanners and heavy hammer but they always did....
Maybe we didnt do the treatment properly but we didnt try it again.

0.05 of a micron is a very small amount of snake oil. (0.00005mm) on a cold day it would shrink to nothing

There arent many ways to repeatably measure much under 5 microns with physical measuring instruments, probably need an electron beam microscope??

Do you have a hyperlink to the product?

If there are no signs of subframe movement or of trailing arm bush wear, why not grease the splines with molycote?

          Chlorinated paraffin will also help.

Id be tempted to give the splines a smear of 5th wheel grease/ waterproof grease. Right sticky stuff.

This is very expensive £20 for 125 ml? iirc, but it is chlorinated paraffin as mentioned. The other automotive source is 'active 8'

Many proprietary cutting oils include chlorinated paraffin too.

It should never be used in mechanisms where bronze is present.

It does work to reduce friction, however the demonstration they use employs a setup that is not present in any car machanism as far as i am aware (point contact)

chlorinated paraffin is subject to many enviromental concerns, and is likley to get banned. (if you want some buy it soon!)

Fwiw i put some of this on my splines (made a mixture of moly grease & fx1) didnt need to fit the new driveshafts i bought!

No need to use heat when applying & I dont think it comes in a spray can.
