    Hi Dave,

Did you manage to find the wiring diagram for the headlights? I too am keen to do this modification.

    Thanks

I bought mine a couple of years ago now. The Dolomite set. Fitted and wired the extra hole. Jumped the wire from the standard side light to the new in headlamp side light so I have four side lights at the front... they are so piddly you cant tell they are on!
Outer lamps have twin filament bulbs and the second filament comes on with the inner lamps so when main beam is on I have 6 filaments lit along with the 4 side lights. No relays just the standard heavy wires with new bullets soldered to the ends and new bullet connectors and I have had no issues with blown fuses or burnt wiring. I have now fitted "bright white" bulbs, 55watt on the inners and 60/55 on the outers. The light is more than adequate once they are setup and adjusted properly.

          Hi Nigel,

I've searched high and low for the diagram I received from another forum member but can't find it

Hope I do find it sometime as I'm hopeless with electrics.......

I think it came from Graham (Staggard); if he is reading this perhaps he could help.

I'll check tonight to see if I kept the diagram from when I wired my relays up.

Thanks very much, both Daves, there no hurry, i'm just piling up the jobs as I now have my left arm in a sling for up to 6 weeks after a shoulder operation (i'm also left handed ).

I'm gathering information and bits so I can get going when i'm free, can't even drive anywhere, reliant on the wife and friends, but can walk to the pub !!

Hi Dave, hope you are well, I think it was me, but my diagram is more complicated than staggering about's and as he has said will work fine with standard wattage bulbs even if you wire up to have 4 dip+4 main. Where as I have off road halogen's and my head lights pull 520watt - 44amp and the dip is 360watt- 30amp so the way his is wired would not work for me, as the change over relays only carry 20 amp and the flasher relay 40 amp. But of course if you are going down this road ( and you think you can get away with it in England) I will be only too pleased to sort out the diagram and be of any help if I can. Or you could go the HID way. Cheers Graham

Fine thanks Graham, now that the cylinder head gasket and alternator problems are behind me. Nice to be able to give the Stag some beans now without worrying about blowing coolant everywhere. Nice dry vee too

I used your diagram and the lights work as I want them: 4 on dip and 4 on main, not 8. Plenty of illumination for the winter I just can't find the diagram to pass on to anyone else. Put it somewhere safe......

image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg Hopefully these photos will help make sense of how you add a 3rd relay to each side, to correct the Wards headlight wiring looms and relays. I've taken a copy of the standard Stag wiring loom, but in colour as I found this helped me being dyslexic. Also I've enclosed Norfolk Blues useful post.

Bit late with reply, but thought I'd post this in case it helps anyone who's using the search facility in future.

this post was a great help to me; so thanks Norfolk Blue:-

I am late to this thread but have also just done the EJ Ward upgrade and have made (I think) a slightly different mod to that suggested by Paul. I can see that replacing the main headlight relay with a 5 pin one will allow 4 main or 4 dip lights to be used rather than 4 main plus 4 dip. However I believe that there is then a problem with flashing when the headlights are not on. I cannot see how it can work with just the two relays but please correct me if I am wrong. What I think is required is a third (5 pin) relay. This third relay is used to remove power to the dip light relay when the main beam relay is powered up. In principle I think what I have done is similar to Alan and his wiring diagram (#23 in the thread). Specifically this is what I did.

                      1. Cut the power feed from the fuse to the dip relay pin 30 at the midway point.
                      2. Joined a 6 inch length of wire with a spade terminal to each cut wire.
                      3. The feed from the fuse goes to the 30pin on the additional third relay.
                      4. The other lead goes from the 87a pin on the third relay to the 30pin on the dip relay.
                      5. A new lead is connected using a double bullet pin connector from the original main pump supply to the 86pin on the third relay.
                      6. The 85 pin on the third relay is taken to earth.
                      7. The 87 pin on the third relay is left unconnected.

When the headlights are turned on (dip only ) the dip relay is powered on and the power to it is fed by the 87a pin on the third relay which is not switched on. When the main beams are turned on the dip relay remains switched on but now no power is supplied to it as it is turned off by the third relay which is now switched on (to 87 pin which is not connected).

I don’t know if there is a better way but I know I now have 4 dip or 4 main, flash works in all cases, I am not doubling any load on any fuses and the extra cost was fairly minimal (£5.90 for relays plus about a £1 for odds and ends). I would have liked to wired direct between the third and dip relays but found it nigh on impossible to remove the terminals from the Ward kit and hence the joins.

                      Hope this is of help.''

I'll see if I can attach some photos. [now at top of post]

                        My take on this;

                        Clean the originals.
                        Fit a HiD kit.
Never look back* (because you can now see so much looking forward)

                        *Excludes mirrors and reversing etc.

                        Regards

                        Steve

E J Ward's were selling an H4 with bulb for £17 or they sell a set including wiring harness if you want to change the dipping regime for £120, service for the one I bought was excellent included were the instructions for changing the wiring as my original was a sealed beam.
                          Regards, John.
