    Cutting Out

    Ok Just a little tester for all you experts out there !!!

    As some of you are aware i've got a electric pump, and the switched feed is through the brake light switch.

    Now i've just moved the sensor that regulates the pump speed to the back of the O/S side cyl head (transfer housing) and in the process managed to break the oil pressure pipe leading to the gauge.......... ordered a new pipe and fitted it, butwhile trying to remove the old pipe from all the wires a crap behind the dashboard, managed to pull the wires off the brake light switch................no problem refitted and went for test drive called into petrol station put 20lts in and set of.......... about 4mls later in the pouring rainas I braked going down a hill I noticed rev counter was not working....... funny then realised engine had cut out, so coasted to a layby put gearlever in park (automatic) turned key........ started straight away, foot on brake pulled lever into reverse engine stopped.......Hmmm back into park turned key started straight away foot on brake pulled back to reverse stopped again, then I realised every time I put my foot on the brake the engine cut out............ so I removed wiring from brake light switch ran a cable straight from the battery to the pump controller and drove home no problem.

    I have now sorted the problem but wondered if any of you can guess what the problem was?

    give me a clue - is the new oil pipe copper or plastic ?

      I'm guessing that you mixed some wires up behind the dash and when you press the brake pedal the ignition circuit is shorted out?

            Hi Roger,

            I assume you have Lumenition. Where is this fed from? Am I warm?

                  Yes I have Luminition......... cant remember where I picked up the feed.

                      Good theory - but sorry wrong.

                      To be fair the work I've just carried out has nothing to do with the problem...........bit of a Red Herring.

                      If you re-read and take out all of the work what are you left with? This could happen to anybody.................In fact it happened to me in France earlier in the year, when it was doing the same thing.

                      Now thats a big clue.

                        Hi Roger
                        If the fuse (3-4) blows, then having both the Stop and reversing lamps on could ground out the tacho therefore pulling the voltage down at the distributor, a bit obtuse but a possibility. The extra path due to the water pump would not help either.

                              If one of your brake light bulbs was shorted to earth, then pressing the brake pedal would ground the 12v feed to your pump, and it would presumably stop. Bulbs usually fail open circuit, but short circuit is not unheard of. Crud in the bulb holder can short things too.


                              If it happened to you in France, then it was probably the12th caseof Burgundy you tried to squeeze in the boot, broke the protective cover over the light cluster and smashed to bulb holder. Don't be so greedy!
