Be very careful when you buy or have your cam covers chromed, most companies bead or sand blast the covers first, the blasting media gets into the gauze filter on the right hand cover and it is virtually impossible to remove it all, run the engine for a few hundred miles and the hot oil washes thebeads/sand/nut shells or whatever is usedout and wrecks the engine. I have seen this on several engines that have been badly damaged due to this. The only thing to do is cut out the shield above the gauze filter and replace it then tack weld the cover back on.
Would powder coated cam covers be bead or sand blasted before painted?
The reason I ask, I bought some a while ago and was going to fit them this weekend.

It depends on who did the job. They could be sand or bead blasted, or chemically stripped. Inany case, I would try and ensure that the filter inside the RH cover is as clean as possible before fitting. Blow it out with air if you can, then clean it out with engine de-greaser and flush with copious amounts of water to get as much blasting media and old oil out as you can.
Can you contact the guy who did the coating to see how he prepared them? He may have done it properly by cutting off the filter plate, blasting the cover, then welding back the filter plate before applying the coating.
