    steering column bolt removal

    Hi everyone

After a summer of getting to know my car. Last week we had a short on the light switch wirring and I need to replace the wiring section under the steering column. Today I spent most of the day trying to remove the steering adjuster bolt, but to no avail. Can anyone advise how to remove it as the manual says it just pulls out. On my MkI the bolt won't come out.

      Hi mark
If its the same as a mk 2, there is a small roll pin that holds it in place. Look for a very small hole in the housing the bolt goes through. I found it easier to unbolt the housing from the dash, 3 bolts, but one of them can be a bit difficult to get to.
      Hope this helps

Whilst the diagram isn't especially good, I've tried to show roughly where the two holes are that contain the roll pin that Dave describes. You just need something like a nail (preferably blunted to prevent it opening up the rollpin) or small screwdriver and a hammer to push out the rollpin.

        Good luck. Cheers

I used a thick split pin instead as I opened the roll pin by using a sharp nail to drift it out.

I would say that with a good Nyloc nut fitted there is no need for the pin, and its a complete nuisance. But a split pin would be better if you want 'belt and braces'.

I've run mine without a pin for years although there may be, potentially, a very dangerous problem - perhaps someone could check it out.

I was driving once and, for heavens only know why, I decided I wanted to adjust the wheel whilst moving (Yes, I know, you shouldn't ) so I slackened the adjusting handle but, as I did so, I approached a slight bend.

Turning the steering wheel, with the adjuster slightly slackened, led to the column nacelle turning, but NOT THE WHEELS . Was this because I'd left that roll pin out or not ? - I think not, however, since then, I've never tried adjusting the steering wheel position whilst on the move

If someone wants to check if this happens on a car still with the roll pin fitted (you don't need to be moving !) then, if so, it would seem that leaving out the roll pin makes no difference.

                    Cheers

There is a lever to the left of the column - if you swing this around 180° it should slacken the steering column and then you should be able to both raise/lower the wheel and also move it in/out.

The action is often stiff if it's not been used for a long time - in fact some owners don't realise that the Stag offers this facility

                        Cheers

Ok, that lever operates on a bolt that goes through the bracket and, on the other end (to the right of the column) there's a small (3/8" AF ?) nyloc nut.

If you slacken that, it should reduce further the clamping force on the cvolumn and free off the column adjustment, all being well.

Let us know how you get on.

                            Cheers
