    trim refitting

Hi, just got all my chrome (full set bumpers etc + trims and horseshoes) back from re-chroming, a search on here for the best way to refit the trims seems to favour silicone instead of clips. is this just normal exterior silicone as used by builders or something different? all replies appreciated , thanks in advance, derek

something like Tiger Seal would be stronger, you would need to tape the trim on and leave overnight, be warned though as removal would almost certainly wreck the trim!!

Yes just used ordinary clear silicone on mine-no problems, having said that haven't tried removing any yet but would have thought you would stand more chance of getting them off without damage as opposed to tiger seal.
After fitting them squeezed some bitumen sealer (again used by builders) in the gap between the strips/horseshoes to stop water ingress-smoothed it over with some white spirit on a cloth-doesn't look a miss at all-car is sapphire blue-not sure how it would look on other colours but did it some years ago on a triumph 2000 which was white and I thought it was ok.

I used clear silicone . I masked the area surrounding the trim and fully filled them I then was able too control the splurge. Down side is you will almost certainly scrap them taking them off but hopefully you won't have too .

Nearly bought some tiger seal then read this post so will be using black silicone mastic as I first thought.

got all the trim on now, all except the long top and bottom front trims went on with silicone, the 2 long ones refused to stay on despite being the original parts so had to resort to clips, looks good with the rechromed bumpers etc, thanks Derek

I will use the dreaded clips but because they will be covered in mastic, the panels shouldn't rust where they have been scratched.

just put plenty of Waxoyl in trim and on car before fitting and that should stop it rusting

I used clips to fit all the chrome trims and strangely enough they only cut in to the top coat and not the primer. I don't know what primer they used but its pretty tough.

How do you know, did you take them off again Graham?

Clips first then trim except for the horseshoes, clips in then on together. But I am guessing if the trim clips never cut to bare metal nor did horsy ones.
