Airbox to carb elbow pipes

Can anyone please tell me what is the function of the pipes that run from the carb elbows into a T piece and then to the airbox?

I ask this as a few years ago, on the rolling road, the tuners found a car where they were really lose and not sealing and commented that power or balance was being lost. They tighten them up some how so that they were sealed and then ran the test again and it made a difference.

Mine do not seal and I bought the copper pipe version and pipes are the wrong shape, so have never bothered to do anything about it

As far as I recall they are vent pipes to the float chambers.

They are only vent pipes. Provided they are not blocked, it wouldnt affect the running of the engine. They are linked to the air filter so as to prevent ingress of dust to the carb.

I presume if they were not tight joint then it would produce a fuel smell?
