    Spin on filter adaptor issues

Hi, im currently fitting a spin on adaptor as part of an oil cooler kit. The centre o ring in the adaptor plate doesn't mate with the engine block. When the adaptor is fully down into the groove where the old filter bowl seals, even without the seal you can see a gap between the inner o ring and block.

Has anyone had this issue, or have they simply sent the wrong adaptor?

    Many thanks,
    James

    Hi James

I had exactly the same issue with our GT6 last year where I purchased a new seal kit for an existing adaptor. I ended making my own O ring from a length of larger diameter rubber cord. The same spin adaptor fits both a Stag and a GT6.

    Good luck

    Bruce

Thanks for your reply. I just accidently dropped the adaptor and it flew into two bits!!!!

I didn't realise the centre piece was sliding.

Following your tip Bruce, I checked the o ring and my o ring I was supplied with is thick enough.

      Many Thanks,
      James

        hi James

May I ask which kit and filter you are using, as I'm thinking of doing the change as well

        cheers Alex

It is the rimmers/think automotive kit. I recommend getting it of think direct as the kit is a lot cheaper. It is advertised as a TR7 kit not a stag kit. Also I got the sandwich plate with built in thermostat.

Earlier adaptors came with two different O rings as the centre section did not slide, and you had to use plasticine to check the O rings sealed otherwise you ended up with leaks or unfiltered oil.

This might not be relevant, but I had a similar issue with my TR6 20 years ago. The local specialist kindly stripped and machined the face of the filter head slightly to a smooth finish (on the block side). No more leaks. He said that they would do this as a matter of course with all filter conversions as about 2/3rds of them leak.
