    play in power steering pump

Good morning all. I have some play in p/s pump at the pulley( in new money about 2mm) i dont have engine in the car at the moment and have never had this pump running so im not sure if this is a problem or if the pulley should have no play at all. If there should be no play would this be a bearing gone and is this a job that needs any special tools. Many thanks Joel.
    Merry Christmas everyone.

Is it just the pulley? loose on the shaft? if not, and the whole shaft and pulley wobbles, the only bearing is a bush.
If the pump belt has been badly overtightened in the past, it is possible to wear the bush away and do real damage inside the pump.
Its an easy enough job to strip the pump and check it out, only one big spring clip which can be a bugger..( dont know if that word will be allowed anymore,) and reseal the pump and I think the bush can be replaced but the damage can also be permanent and render the pump US
