    Rust/ value

    Hi all,
in my quest to buy a Stag I viewed one today and it looked good and solid, it is for sale at £5700,
I has some surface rust underneath, everything is solid though. It has a few paint imperfections which i am not too bothered about, it has some rust bubbling on the seam where the rear wing meets the cill I guess this is fairly common? it has a little on the wheelarch lips which is not bad.
In your wisdom do you think it is worth the money and my only concern is the rust on the seam.
It is motd and tax exempt and the engine box etc is all good.
    Your comments would be appreciated.

The rust on this seam is very common and is caused by the body flexing over bumps which cracks the seam sealer and lets water into the joint. It is really dependant on how corroded the metal is under the paint, sometimes it can be cleaned off and touched in by hand if it is not too bad. In some respects it can be a good thing as it can knock a lot of value off an otherwise good car, but it is the sort of thing that can easily be hidden behind a quick respray and come back to bite the owner of a shiney car firmly on the arse.
    I still have the toothmarks.

The price soinds right, as evehn if you had to spend a few k fixing any unforseen problems you would be adding value.
      What about the engine/history?

The engine is good no timing chain noise or blue smoke etc it also holds good oil pressure. I took it for a good run and the temp guage stayed on half way all the time even when idling after a good run, there is a kenlowe fan fitted which is manually operated but it wasnt needed. It had a droan from the diff/propshaft at about 50 mph which the vendor said he would sort and then I will pay £5500 for it.
        Thanks for your interest Steve

The last time you asked - http://www.stag.org.uk/forum/showthr...637#post297637 - I suggested you gave Andy Moss a call, but you didn't acknowledge my suggestion. Did you call him? Is this Stag local to you? If so, there are several helpful members in your area who may be able to view it and offer guidance.

The droning (whine) from the diff at 50 is common, but needs a good rebuild to sort it. This could cost the thick end of a grand including labour to change it. Much less if you DIY.

My apologies DJT I am new to this!!
I looked at Andys page etc and he had some cars not all Stags for sale but none were in my price range.
I am happy with the car Ive found, for £6k i realise I am going to have a car that needs some work but this seems solid.

OK Steve. Hope it is a good one. Hope to see you at future local meetings. The next local one is the AGM in January. You are welcome to come along.

DJT it doesn't whine it was almost like a vibration, maybe tyre vibration or the like. Or maybe propshaft out of balance or uj worn?
Anyway he said he would sort it so when I go to pick it up i will give it a good test run to make sure it is sorted!
I'm not sure if this Stag will be in the same league as a lot of the club members!!! But it is all I can afford! Unfortunately whatever your budget you always think you could get something better! £6k doesnt buy a show winner unfortunately!
                  Thanks for your help, Steve
