Yes will keep looking thanks. I reckon I could go down to a smaller size than 1-1/4, but would then have to adapt the end of the pipe or use a smaller pipe. I will see what I can find.

Well, I've finally got something to report on this, one cylinder head is now off!

Before I took the cam chains off though I noticed a considerable slack in one of the chains, no wonder the rattle sounded absolutely awful and I'm astounded it hadn't jumped a cog or two...

Anyhow, I had bought rather cheaply a 12-tonne bottle jack (didn't want to regret saving €5 by buying a 4-tonne version instead in case it wasn't strong enough), and it worked fantastically well. Thankfully the bottle jack just about fit, it would've been very annoying to find out the bottle jack was actually too tall.... I was able to jack the cylinder head high enough to be able to lift it off instead of going through the hassle of cutting the two remaining studs. Using bits of wood helped prevent the studs from bending too much, and I was able to unscrew the studs with the stud extractor without too much effort.

The cylinder head itself actually looks to be in a pretty good condition, which is reassuring.

The cylinder block looks a bit more messy though...

Tidied up a bit it doesn't look too bad though...

Now let's hope the other cylinder head comes off just as easily with the help of my new most favourite tool.... Then it'll be all about cleaning things up to have a proper look at what needs to done and what needs to be replaced, but this is definitely a big milestone for myself. With a bit of luck I'll find a few hours to continue this job this weekend.

      Cheers,
      Joakim

Well done Joakim, it is a satisfying feeling to eventually remove the head after struggling for a long time!!

Well done, a good result. The engine looks like oil changes have not been frequent enough. Are you planning to strip the engine fully?

Thanks guys! Yes, so far so good...

Chris, I am indeed planning on completely stripping the engine while I'm at it, it's an unknown entity to me so would be silly of me to chance it when I've come this far. I suppose the easy bit is to dismantle the whole thing, it'll be interesting to see how the rebuilding goes when I get to that point.

I'm anyway really enjoying the learning process so I'll be taking my time and hopefully it'll all come good in the end. Worst case scenario I'll just gather all the bits and bring it to a proper engine builder with Stag experience! Then again, how hard can it be (famous last words!)...

            Cheers,
            Joakim
