    wind noise????

    Hi all,
in my quest to find a Stag I test drove one which I am happy with.
On the test I had the soft top up and at 40=60 ish mph I could hear a drone from the rear end/ diff not a whine, maybe wheel bearing tyre noise?? I am picking it up soon and before that a leak from the diff wiil be sorted and anything found bearing wise will be done
. When the owner drove it he said he thought it was wind noise!! As it didnt happen when the roof was down??!!
i said I guess you wouldnt hear much with the roof down??
Has anyone else heard of this wind noise/drone or am i just being too cautious?
    Thanks in anticipation Steve

Hi. Noisy diff usually sounds like a whine rather than wind noise. Particularly noticeable around 50mph on partial load. It will keep going for many years, so if you can live with it for the times the roof is up and most noticeable, then it shouldn't be a deal killer if the rest of the car is sound. Just negotiate a discount.

Thanks DJT and TJK the diff is being taken out and new oil seals being put in, hopefully they will find a worn bearing or something? A friend of mine thought it may be the front nut had been done up too tight making the bearing moan a bit????

If it is whining, then it will be due to incorrect loading on the crown wheel and pinion. Setting this up is a skilled art, requiring specialist equipment. Worn bearings usually make a different noise, more like a rumbling. Then there is the quill shaft bearing in the diff carrier. If working in this area it is worth reinforcing the diff carrier if it hasn't been done already. Failure of this part is quite terrifying.
