Hi all,

Moved on to stripping front suspension, parts removed, sent for blasting then powder coating, front springs look pretty newish and measure 14 1/2 " free lenghth.

Does anyone know what ta new standard spring measures (off car)

Nigel. The length of a new spring off the car these days no longer seems to be the deciding factor getting the getting correct ride height. Different manufacturers seem to have different compression rates for them. I would suggest that as both yours have the same free length, and if the ride height of the car is correct, you just replace them. Buying new ones could open a whole can of worms.

Thought i'd come back to this post as I have replaced all 4 road springs with new from JP a couple of months ago and whilst I was not happy with the ride height the consensus was to get some miles on it to "settle down".

Well about 800 + miles on and I now have a speedboat with negative camber!!

The ride heights are now : N/S Front 15 1/2" O/S Front 15 3/8" N/S Rear 13" O/S Rear 13 1/4"

Front suspension lower arms not tightened until the vehicle weight was on, new poly spring seats fitted.

Rear suspension sub frames checked for ovality in mounting bolts when diff, mounting plate, bushes and strengthened diff extension fitted, news sub frame mounts fitted.

Emailed JP's and they tell me they have not had any complaints about their standard springs relating to height and suggest fitting lowered front springs, I have asked for measurements of their standard springs so I can check against mine.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thanks Ian, it will allow me to compare different springs, i'm only taking off one new rear spring and I still have the original.

Twice I fitted so called standard springs on to the Stag. Both times the the ride height was way too high. I did not get these springs from Paddocks but from elsewhere, (in fact, one set came with the car when I bought it). Anyway, I noticed that Paddocks advertised "standard" springs lowered by 1", not the lowered progressive springs. I fitted these and now the ride height and comfort is spot on.

Got measurements off JP for their stock coil springs Front 389 mm Rear 317 mm, removed one of my rears and it is 317 mm as per their stock.

Unfortunately no time to strip the front as off on hols next week and putting Stag in body shop for a bit of welding and paintwork.

Searched to see if I could find any detail of spring free lengths and the only supplier who gives measurements is LD Parts, they quote Front 400 mm and rears 330 mm.

Based on my existing measurements using LD rears would give me additional 1/2" at the rear but also increase the front which is already high !!

So, it appears that spring length is arbitrary based on manufacturer and the spring tension could also affect the ride height, others have said they have tried number of springs before a satisfactory ride height was achieved.

Is it possible that incorrect parts have been fitted from other models that may be different, could anything be fitted incorrectly, it all looks ok to me ?


Any other suggestion or recommendations to help me solve this issue would be grateful received.
