Club Breakdown Scheme

I had to speak with the club insurance company today. The number I had for the policy seemed a bit awkward, so I took the opportunity to check the numbers in my mobile phone with the current ones in the magazine.

Somewhere along the line the main number appears tohave changed, so I thought I would check the breakdown cover - far more important and you need to call it at awkward times in my experience, so good to have the correct number!

I had a breakdown number 01277720763 storedin my phone - They had me on file when I called them, but the number isnt in the magazine? However, there is something about RAC cover and 15% discount. Why would you want that when you have the club cover? Can anyone explain?

Have to admit, I've wondered this myself - just never got around to finding out.

Not sure without checking in the mag, but isn't Steve Kiefer, South East Regional Co-ordinator, the contact for insurance matters? If he is, probably worth a call/email to clarify.

Raeding the info on page 3 of the magazine, I interpret the 15% discount as being available for SOC members who don't have the club insurance scheme, and whose own insurance doesn't have breakdown cover. I thought most, if not all, classic policies incuded breakdown cover though.

It maybe a discount available for the other car or cars owned by the member or family.

I don't have the Stag insured via the club scheme but I guess the breakdown cover only covers you whilst the policy holder isdriving the Stag.

However, I am a member of the RAC because it gives me and my wife cover whetherwe area driver or a passenger inANY car. Thisis especially useful whenour sons are takingus about in their beat-up bangers, either together or separately- it means we can get home!

I guess it's horses for courses, I actually like that peace of mind for me and especially for my wife and am willing to pay for it. Even if I transferred my Stag insurance to the club scheme, I would not cancel my RAC cover, though the coverwhilst I was drivingthe Stag would appear to be duplicated.

As well as the club cover through RH insurance I pay £34 a year to Autoaid. This covers me and the Mrs in whatever car we drive, and includes breakdown repairs excluding parts, recovery, Alternative travel (up to 5 passengers to get home), Emergency Overnight accomodation, Home Start and recovery in the event if the vehicle cannot be driven as a result of damage by vandalism. It is essentially an insurance scheme. It covers a caravan or trailer too.

I (the Mrs actually) have used this twice, once when she had an electrical failure, and once whenthe clutch cable went and her car had to be recovered. You simply ring their number and they send someone who either mends it or recovers you, or you can use anyone you choose. The ones they send are independent operators. You pay them by card, get an invoice, and then fill in a simple claim form which you send in. On both occasions the cheque arrived by return of post.

Autoaid is run by Boncaster which is in the same building as RH insurance. I can strongly recommend it as being way way cheaper that RAC or AA.
