Puff of smoke argggg !

Hi

Rewired alternator today,witched on ignition ,all's well ,turned over .........clunk puff of smoke from back of alternator , no burn back on the wires or blown fuses.

took it back to the factors, tested all ok ( I actually watched it work on the test rig ) going to retry in the morning

any thoughts most welcome

Try switching it on witching it is black magic could that be the problem

I am going to use different connections on the back of the alternator,it may have been that the threaded conections have been shorting on to the bodywork?

Well totally rewired again ,same result ,so got the mrs involved ????

she turned the engine over result ,a RED HOT choke cable ,looks like i've lost an earth? Didn't see ant attached to the alternator's original position,but it was a 100% pita to take off.

Found the earth strap I didn't know I had taken off,engine starts fine

but alternator charging at 15.2 volts at the battery and 15.4out of the alternator.I testing multi meter in the morning on my modern???

any suggestions most welcome

Earth? Sounds more like you have a live feed shorting against the choke cable.

It should already be there. Timing case to inner wing

Refer to the Joseph Lucas Theory on how Electricity travels along wires, and why you should not let the smoke out

Seriously though, have you checked you have a good engine to body Earth?

I accidently disconnected my engine earth once, the result was a red hot accelerator cable. It actually passed an MOT like that, even though they had to push it into the garage as it decided not to start after I parked it outside!!

That voltage is too high, looks like the regulator may have been damaged and that may have been the puff of smoke. You can buy new regulators cheap on ebay and they are dead easy to fit under the plastic cover.

Rethinking about this are you saying the ignition/alternator is earthing back through the choke cable if you have no other earth?
