Steering rack seal replacement.

Am in the process of replacing the seals on the spare steering rack I have and have come across a problem someone, hopefully, can help me with.

Withdrew the cylinder sleeve from the rack shaft and there is a rubber seal on the inside. When removing this seal it popped out before I could record which way round the new one should be fitted. One side of the seal is flat but the other is grooved. Can anyone advise which way round it goes, please.

Also fitted to the inside of the sleeve, adjacent to the rubber seal is a nylon(?) ring. There is no new ring in the seal kit. Should there be? If not I will have to reuse the old one, is this okay?

If you mean the Lip seals you have to fit them with the wider face so it can hold the oil back if that makes sense. I reused the old white nylon rings, again if I'm thinking of the same thing they are just spacers to hold seals tight in place. Pictures would help if you can post them.

Once again thank you for your quick reply.

I have never had any luck posting pictures on this forum so I have added two links to my public Dropbox folder.

The first picture shows the seal I am referring to at top left with the flat side facing.

The second picture shows the grooved side facing.

The nylon ring I refer to is at bottom left of both pictures.

Both seal and ring fit inside the sleeve.

So my question is, should the grooved side of the seal fit to the left or right of the sleeve as you look at it?

The picture shows the flat side of the seal, so do I assume that the seal sits in the bore of the sleeve in the position it is in?

The picture also shows the White nylon ring that was not included in the seal kit, and, presumably, will have to reuse.

The wider face of the seal (grooved side ?) is the sealing part of it, the nylon ring locks it in place. the seal stops the oil escaping towards the gaiter and forces it to act on the piston circliped to the shaft. So the one we are talking about faces inwards as does the other side in the casting. In picture 17 I think you can just make out the seal the correct way round (the ring is against the flat face).
