clean and repaint a stag alloy wheel

I have bought a second hand stag alloy wheel which is a bit tatty. I need some advice on DIY cleaning and painting. I'm considering using Hammerite primers and paints. Will I have to paint the inside of the rim ? IE the bit you can't normally see for the tyre, or just give it a good clean?

Personally I would give it a good clean, if the paint comes could leave a bad seal on the bead or be floating around inside the tyre.

I have used hammerite paints on Triumph alloys for years (both Dolomite and Stag), and had good results. The special metals primer sticks better than straight hammerite

I always do where the tyre bead sits as damp trapped here corrodes the alloy and lets the air out after 12 months of year round use, the painted alloy usually keeps the wind inside the tyre for years.

When I restored my TR7 alloys I cleaned all the corrosion of the inside of the rims and sprayed them using an etch primer followed by primer and top coat. Also remember to do the area where the valve seats. This will stop any air leaking out.

For polishing try Scotchbrite wheels on a power drill, then finish with Autosol.
