    Well......... Would You????

    Is this scary or not........

I have been wondering about getting a car lift later on in the year and have noted that one or 2 members have bought one in the past.

The lift in the picture above goes higher that the 1m that a lot of lifts seem to go to. There are a few of them about, I guess made in China and sold over here with a UK company logo on them. These go to around 1.3M height

So, I was wondering if any forum guys out there have one of the 1.3 metre lifts (as opposed to the 1M type) and what thoughts they have on them?

    Cheers
    Keith

Yes, that is the big advantage of the 2 posters. How thick is your concrete slab? Did you have any issues with fixing the posts to the floor?

          Cheers

Buses must be like our friends on the other side of the pond as I worked as a bus fitter between 1983 and 1986 and I am sure that they only weighed about 8 tons then

If you consider a two post lift be aware that it's very unlikely that a standard garage base will take the post loading.

When I cut mine for "letting in" the scissor lift into the floor I hit dirt at 150mm and so then I reconcreted another 150mm below that for the lift to sit on and that's with two pads 500mm wide and about 2 metres long with an excellent foot print. The 2 posts lifts I read up on needed at least 200mm concrete below the posts for safety and the avoidance of having the loaded lift breaking through the concrete over time.

Oh...and as a working weight a 17 Ton 2 axle chassis truck with a cab but without any bodywork will weigh out at about 7000kgs, so you can reckon that the double deck bodywork can well take it up to the 13000kgs range.

They certainly are, a Routemaster was just under 8 ton as I recall. Who did you work for ? Which Garage

Looks OK to me, but I'm not getting under it!! The issue I see is that you can only work on the front and rear, you have sugar all access in the middle? You couldn't drop the gearbox for example?

And you'd have to do it all outside unless you have a mighty high garage.

And would you trust cheap workmanship, it's a bit like the current VW ad on TV; a shark cage is a shark cage isn't it?

                      Hi Keith,

I have one of theses from strongman. I bought it last November as having had a big operation last year it makes things easier to access and the working hight for some jobs better, not just getting under the car. Once the car is in position there are movable arms to locate, where you want them, with different rubber mounts. It goes up to about 1.3 mtrs but once you lower it onto the safety lock it is about 1mtr.

The car is very stable and we tried rocking it once it was at full hight the first time I loaded the car. It weighs 1/2 ton but you can move it around. I have fitted an eye bolt in the floor if my garage and use a lidl electric hoist fitted to the front of the lift to help pull it back into the garage. I have had all new pipes made (£45) so I have quick release connectors and extra long pipes. I have then taken all the equipment off the trolly and fitted it on the wall of the garage so as to reduce the weight of the trolly for moving it around. It fits under my stag in the garage.

I looked at various use types but this seemed to be the most sturdy but was more expensive.

                      Tony

That is remarkably similar to what my car spent 3 months on a couple of years ago. I had no worries about working on the car.

Hi Micky, I may well end up with a lift like yours yet. How are you getting on with yours? Great installation btw!

Have you found that there is anything you struggle to do when a car is up on it?

                            Cheers

Didn't get that way, I joined LT in 83 (Abbey District) then went to (Wandle) which ended up as London General when privatized and then became Go-Ahaed London. Worked in Holloway, Wandsworth and Merton. When I moved up the ladder my office was in Stockwell.

All in the past for me now, thankfully.

ps Sorry for high jacking your thread Keith.
