    Wing mirrors

    Hi all

I am new to Stag ownership and this forum.

I have a reasonable list of things I need to do, and would like to do, to the new arrival before I can get it back on the road. I am hoping to have it good to go this spring, so will hopefully meet a few of you then...

In the meantime, I wondered whether anyone has views on what type of wing mirrors to put on a Stag. Mine has never had any installed as far as I am aware (and I would like some!). The guy I bought it off suggested 'clip on' wing mirrors so as to not mess around with drilling bodywork. However, most of the cars I have see have had permanently installed wing mirrors. Looking at Rimmers there are several types including 'regular' oval/square style, bullet style or quarterlights - not sure which direction to take.

Any comments or specific suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks
    Mark

    Hi Mark

Welcome to the Forum - speaking as a fairly recent member, hopefully you'll find it both a useful resource and amusing. My personal preference is for what I think is the standard positioning on the doors by the quarter-light windows. To my eye they don't look good on the front wings. In terms of functionality, if you are reasonably tall you'll find the standard positioning on the doors requires you to bend about to see anything in them, as there is little scope for moving the position! I seem to recall that there is a way of fitting a rubber washer to provide a better range of movement, might be from a Jag part. Maybe someone else will chip in with more details on that last point. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your Stag and all it entails!

Welcome Mark, hope you enjoy your car.

Very few Stags have wing mirrors. most have door mirrors, but you got me thinking as to why. As a 16 - 17 year old apprentice I was often let loose on brands new cars to carryout the PDI and fit wing mirrors and fit a radio and aerial. I wonder if so few Stag's have wing mirrors is due to the difficulty in getting to the underside of the wing to tighten them up

I think door mirrors look better ,but getting a good view is difficult with either type , if not positioned very very carefully, ( mine are rubbish) look at the shape and type of glass to give better results i.e. concave v flat .

I wish the chap who fitted mine had googled images of stags to see what's been fitted !

Yup, mine originally had wing mirrors fitted at some point - the holes haven't been filled / painted perfectly but if you look in the wheel arches you can see where a hole has been made to gain access to the fixing nut.

Both the Mark I's I've had (LD 364 and LD 396) had wing mirrors fitted. They're totally useless and I prefer the look of door mirrors. However I'd assumed that early Mark I's were fitted with wing mirrors - perhaps that wasn't the case?

If I didn't have the wing ones already in place I'd have door ones added - even though I hear they're not much use either!

Mine has one door mirror on the drivers side, I would be lost without it but it is hard work as I have to move myself quite a lot to see anything out of it. I was going to fit a passenger side on but I don't think ill bother now as I've just about got used to parking it.

I have no problem with the fitted door mirrors placement and find they are okay to use on the road. My problem is access to the Stag garage is a dogleg and I need to be able to adjust the l/hand to assist with backing. As we know Stags don't have electric mirrors. After a lot of searching I have settled on 80s XJS as the most Stag look friendly. There is a modified Stag here in NZ with Honda 2000 mirrors but not what I wanted. I have sourced a 2nd hand set(pair) with joysticks and a heap of wiring from a Jaguar dismantler in the UK but as yet have not cut metal. Soon I plan with all the seasonal hooha gone.
                Cheers Ian

Door mirror adjusters are available from Peter at LD Parts. They improve things a lot.
                  Hope the info below helps.

                  Door Mirror Adjuster Rings YKC2961INS
                  £4.35 INC VAT

With this pair of Adjuster Rings fitted you can use your Door Mirrors. They take the form of a black plastic washer which fits between the mirror head and the mounting stud. Originally developed by Tex Automotive for Jaguar Cars this item now brings new levels of articulation to your Stag Door mirror. Mainly needed for Drivers side but sold in pairs to maintain symmetry of appearance.

Thanks everyone! What I am hearing seems to be that door/wing mirrors could be a nice idea in theory, but likely not to be of that much use?!!! Oh well, best learn to look over my should more often...

Joking aside - it seems to me that door or quarterlight mirrors may be the way forward, and if I can make them adjustable then that would be better. I may hold off on this upgrade until I have had chance to look around a load of Stags and their mirror positioning.

Thanks again (getting ready to try and sort a oil leak, and replace water hoses to fix another coolant leak, over the weekend!).

I changed the heads of mine from flat to convex glass, much wider field of view.

No, when I worked in Triumph dealers back then we had to fit all the door mirrors, if a customer wanted them - or if a salesman had persuaded them that they wanted them !

I agree, but one word of warning. Once fitted, do not try to adjust the mirror, even fractionally, without slackening it all, otherwise you'll break the plastic washers. I wonder how I know that - twice Doh

I often wonder if you were very careful in where you fit a door mirror (sit in car to choose position) if it couldn't be put in a good position. The trouble is that most cars have already got holes so there's no easy alternative to fitting them there.

                          Cheers

Whatever you fit and wherever they go it won't be as good as your modern.

My car came with nice new paint and no mirrors at all. So I didnt have the heart to drill holes, and knowing the limitations of door mirrors I decided to fit a clip-on to the driver's side quarter light. Quite satisfied with that and I might now fit one to the nearside. .
