    electronic ignition

    Hi all,
does anyone have any feedback to give re the electronic ignition set up that replaces the points in the distributor?
It looks like an oe fitment from the outside apparently?
I would like to know if they are any good?
They cost approx £50 with a sports coil.
    Thanks for your help

Hi It's the first thing I fit on a new classic, super reliable ,no adjustment needed its a fit and almost forget after market kit.only downside is when the fail (never had it happen ,on cars or scooters ,and I also fitted many in the 70's ) your car is dead ,but you can carry spare points if you fancy fitting them on a cold December night in the sleet !!!!!!!

    10 / 10 FROM ME GOOD LUCK

Hi Steve. I have one on my stag and herald. No problems so far, and have done well over 6000 miles.
The herald one is a Petronix system, better built and more expensive but similar principle.

You may not need the sports coil as they should work fine with the original ballasted points type coil.

I bought Powerspark for mine- about £30. No trouble in 18 months. I used to carry the old points in the car just in case of a failure but decided that at £30 another unit was more practical than trying to change back to points. I have heard that some of the cheap electronic ignitions have the wrong dwell angle but mine is spot on.

I had a Lumination fitted when I bough the car, when it failed (the only time the car let me down) I replaced it with a AccuSpark cheap enough to carry a spare and quick to fit. Graham

I got the unit sold by LD Parts - its brilliantly simple and works like a dream with no additional wiring or external boxes.

I have used the Pertronix system for years without any issue at all; but do not leave the ignition switched on without the engine running or you will permanently damage the Pertronix system.

That doesnt sound right, are you sure? Even the 'budget' Powerpark/Accuspark types have an automatic cutoff which prevent this happening.

I must admit I don't see that one either. Graham

Well, at least that is what the man told me: What will happen if I leave the ignition switch on when the engine is not running?
Leaving the ignition switch on when the engine is not running, can cause permanent damage to the ignition system, and related components. This does not apply to the accessory position of the ignition switch.
