Just thought I'd post about the benefit occasionally to others, of car forums like ours.
I received a call from my wife's friend who had broken down. She's got a big Volvo 4x4, and the ignition key wouldn't turn past position 1 and it was stuck in gear. She had 2 young children in the car with her and the car was stuck in a tight entrance public car park in Brighton. The AA had come after 2.5 hours but couldn't fix it, and couldn't get the car moved. They were going to send a flat loader round but that wasn't going to arrive for another 2-3 hours, and they were pretty certain it wouldn't negotiate the restrictive entrance to the city car park.
I did a quick Google of the problem, and before I even finished typing it popped up the problem, which obviously was really common. A quick look at the posts on the various car club forums, quickly gave a variety of solutions [as an alternative to a big bill from calling out the Volvo garage]
I was busy, so sent my wife out, armed with a can of silicone spray, screwdriver and hammer, and got her to pick up the master key to the Volvo.
5 minutes later my wife got her friends car started! And it starts every time [the write ups on the forums, have followed the repair up, and surprisingly the problem doesn't seem to recur, at least in the next year or 2.]
Luckily my wife wasn't arrested whilst using the tools in the car park!
Dave.
