I am certain of thebenefits of the 4 speed ZF box in the Stag but not convinced of the value of the conversion at £2000. This is why I am going the 'home conversion' route following in Les' footprints. I decided to use the 4speed electronic box from a BMW and it will go in this winter. Have machined up the plate to join the ZF box to the Stag gearbox and it looks the business bolted together. For me, a trained electronics engineer who enjoys milling and turning in my home workshop the project is as interesting as the outcome.

Pic shows the end of the ZF belching after it has been sawn off and machined and fitted to the Stag belching. This assy then bolts straight onto the ZF gearbox.
Alan, this is the bit where £2k suddenly sounds a lot of money. I'm tempted to DIY but with all the other pending projects may not get round to it, hence considering a kit.

Nice picture BTW, I guess this is the biggest hurdle. How did you determine the thickness of the adaptor? I assume you have a mill at home, presumably nota big problem gettingit professionally machined?

My two main reasons for considering it are (a) the BW is awful and (b) I need more mpg, hence the conversion to manual last year. While it was better in both cases, reverting to the BW was a pleasure. If the fuel savings aren't there then I'd be disappointed.

Towing a small trailer @ 65mph= 20mpg, so 22mpg will be 10% better, > 22 will be brilliant! Ok in a typical year thats only saving £80+, but it keeps the Mrs from commenting it drinks marginally more than its driver....
I see you 'spellchecked' your reply, amused to see 'Bellhousing' = 'Belching'

With regard to the required thickness of the converter plate this does not have to be exact as the accuracy is required when you assemble the whole thing up and calculate the thickness of the spacers required to mount the Torque Converter to the flexiplate. Any difference in the thickness of the adaptor plate is accomodated in the calculation.
I personally could never justify £2000 to replace a good working BW65, my car would be better off spending the money on the body and paint. So £200 is about what it will cost me to do a 'home conversion' and this can be justified by the reduced revs and better acceleration (being an electronic box mine will have the 'sport' and 'economy' switching) if it drinks less it will be a welcome outcome!
Answering you other question, you have to attached the complete autobox to the engine you cannot fit the bellhousing (belching) then fit the rest of the box. - Alan

Well spotted Alan - I think belching sums my flatulent Stag up with all that it drinks.

Listening to all the views and looking at my bank balance, I'm sold on the auto but not the price. So I've decided to refit the manual when I repair and replace the engine over winter then sort out a DIY auto so very keen to hear of your experience, if you don't mind?

Ipreviously had a good look at the previous posting on "auto for £100" so have fair idea of whats involved. I assume the gearbox output matches the Stag prop and any difference in gearbox length is taken up by theprop splines? How are you mating the speedo on your electronic box? Finally - what type and where did you source the box/convertor? There used to be an excellent breakers in Twyford, sadly no more I believe.

When this post has run its courseI'll contact you via email if ok. I visit my dad in High Wycombeperiodically soif agreeable would be interested in seeing what you have before installation?

Who is it who actually supllies the kit? Do you think if I paid for one and offerred them a free holiday in our rental apartment they'd bring one out and fit it for me?

        Hi Terry

I think Kevin and I could be persuaded, I would think it might take 3-4 weeks to complete

Paul, Wycombe is just up the road and there is always a 'cup of tea' (or something stronger!) for any 'Staggers' passing. Delighted to see you and show you what I have done and what is involved with a 'Home ZFConversion' although I don't claim any credit as the inspiration and details came from Les in Middlesbro.. send me a PM when you are coming over.

            Hi Kevin,

when you look at the MPG, do you factor in the change in gearing? After I had a 3.45 fitted, I proved that the speedo is under-reading so, my thoughts are thatit wouldbe difficult to accurately calculte the miles travelled.

Changing to a ZF box doesn't affect the speedo at all, only changing the diff or tyre sizes will do that. My speedo is accurate to within about 3mph at 70 mph according to a borrowed sat nav.

I checked my speedo after fitting the 4 speed ZF and with 195x70x14 tyres it is spot on by the sat nav.

I checked mine as well. When I was parked, it was 100% accurate.
