I see you 'spellchecked' your reply, amused to see 'Bellhousing' = 'Belching'
With regard to the required thickness of the converter plate this does not have to be exact as the accuracy is required when you assemble the whole thing up and calculate the thickness of the spacers required to mount the Torque Converter to the flexiplate. Any difference in the thickness of the adaptor plate is accomodated in the calculation.
I personally could never justify £2000 to replace a good working BW65, my car would be better off spending the money on the body and paint. So £200 is about what it will cost me to do a 'home conversion' and this can be justified by the reduced revs and better acceleration (being an electronic box mine will have the 'sport' and 'economy' switching) if it drinks less it will be a welcome outcome!
Answering you other question, you have to attached the complete autobox to the engine you cannot fit the bellhousing (belching) then fit the rest of the box. - Alan

Alan, this is the bit where £2k suddenly sounds a lot of money. I'm tempted to DIY but with all the other pending projects may not get round to it, hence considering a kit.
Nice picture BTW, I guess this is the biggest hurdle. How did you determine the thickness of the adaptor? I assume you have a mill at home, presumably nota big problem gettingit professionally machined?
My two main reasons for considering it are (a) the BW is awful and (b) I need more mpg, hence the conversion to manual last year. While it was better in both cases, reverting to the BW was a pleasure. If the fuel savings aren't there then I'd be disappointed.
Towing a small trailer @ 65mph= 20mpg, so 22mpg will be 10% better, > 22 will be brilliant! Ok in a typical year thats only saving £80+, but it keeps the Mrs from commenting it drinks marginally more than its driver....

I am certain of thebenefits of the 4 speed ZF box in the Stag but not convinced of the value of the conversion at £2000. This is why I am going the 'home conversion' route following in Les' footprints. I decided to use the 4speed electronic box from a BMW and it will go in this winter. Have machined up the plate to join the ZF box to the Stag gearbox and it looks the business bolted together. For me, a trained electronics engineer who enjoys milling and turning in my home workshop the project is as interesting as the outcome.
Pic shows the end of the ZF belching after it has been sawn off and machined and fitted to the Stag belching. This assy then bolts straight onto the ZF gearbox.
