    Engine mount advise

Hello, after researching on here it seems that the new mounts are of poor quality. I am undecided on weather to replace or stick with my originals. The only think being I don't know how much these have sagged and when the engine goes back in it will have tubular manifolds and I have a thick cast type steering shaft, so I will need all the clearance I can get (or do I fit a steel shaft and stick with these mounts?).

Here are a couple of pics of my possibly iffy mount, be interesting to see what people think...

    Many Thanks,
    James

Looks like in the bottom picture the rubber has started to separate from the steel bracket.

Yes it has slightly, I was considering nipping the metal up as it has about a 5mm gap.

Sorry the pics are upside down ive only just noticed!

PS. Don't have a problem with spending the money on the new mounts I just don't want to fit a new part that is going to wear out before the one I already have!

      Cheers,

are the manifolds new or second hand ? because they changed the design to over come the steering shaft,on mine they have a flat section on one of the pipes

The problem is the bond between the metal and rubber is broken so I don't know if doing what you say will help. I certainly understand your dilemma in replacing them with parts that are available, I was in the same boat when I had the heads off, I decided to leave well alone and see if I could come across some NOS in the future. If the old rubber is still good, just degrease it and the metal, and rebond it with some Loctite. Hold it in a vice until set. New rubber seems to be a waste of money. PS does anyone do them in poly?

Not sure about the "Loctite", Chris; it being a tradename for a variety of different adhesives.

In engineering, construction, etc., fastening two dissimilar materials together is a problem as old as mankind's imagination. Different "trades" take different approaches; welding, riveting, brazing, mechanical joints, bolts, adhesives, lashing, etc.

Joining "rubber" (generic) or plastics (generic) to other materials is a real challenge for chemists and adhesive manufacturers.

                Students often go down this line;

                Student; "got any superglue?"
Me; Errr, yes; what is it you want to stick together?
Student; "Does it matter - superglue sticks anyfink and everyfink dunnit?"
Me; If it's that good; how come it doesn't stick the lid to the container.

I confess I don't know the answer to the question raised; but I do know it's not quite as simple as it seems.

Yes Loctite do a lot of different ahdhesives. Loctite 480 is like a reinforced superglue and i have found it works well in lots of apps.

I got a pair of NOS mounts from the USA. There seem to be a few out there.

Just looked at my engine mounts and just look at my near side one. Could this give me a vibration?
