has anyone tried replacing the bonnet stay with the sort of gas struts you find on a hatchback... reason I hear you ask? to stop the bonnet flapping about in the wind...............

I'm not a fan of the original as in time it just looks messy . I came up with making it out of stainless it more rigid but still flaps in the wind . I'm thinking will a gas strut guarantee to withstand a gust with such a big area ?

Could a nylon gromit be placed over the end to reduce the amount of slack and / or a second one to reduce the pivot on one side.

The gas struts are good but they don't stop binnet slamming shut if it's windy - I have had this happen with the Jaguar (bigger bonnet I know)
The idea of a nylon washer or bobbin shaped wheel wold be good - I rember the Rover P6 with the boot mouthed spare wheel had a similar set up
hopefully this link works to the image of the "Boot Prop"

If you give me a couple of days I will see if I can get some pic's of the set up I have fitted, and the struts that I used if you want them that is, let me know.
As far as I know Dave M was the first one to have them fitted to a stag.

Some gas struts have a locking function built in, so the bonnet can't slam shut. Usually found on bonnets (Range Rover, Lotus...), not rear hatches. To unlock you first have to extend it a bit further. Which is apparently to difficult for some belgian MOT-testers, who just force the bonnet shut, bending the strut in the process...Lotus Esprit Turbo SE 'Emma'
Triumph Stag 'Blanche' work in progress
