A Stag dwarfed by modern cars

There is an interesting debate on another car forum about how much smaller classic cars are when compared to modern equivalents.

A 1970s four seat GT car looking rather small against a modern mini-car Renault Twingo

My Stag being dwarfed by a Honda Jazz and a Renault Clio

Bereft of a Triumph of any description.

I know what you mean Peter, when I have mine outside my house and you look along the row of packed cars from any distance it almost hidden.

Probably in reality a mix of fashion and NCAP ratings.

Would be interesting to compare the internal dimensions v external of classic and current Minis and Fiat 500's. I would guess the internal measurements are not much different.

Look on the front page of this morning's Daily Telegraph. The report states that a Ford executive, Sheryl Connelly their "futurologist"(I wonder how she got that job!), says that because of obesity manufacturers need to speed up the development of driverless cars as well as making them bigger. Apparently obesity slows up response times and in some cases drivers are unable to turn their heads in order to reverse.

Not sure about the internal measurements but the external are certainly different! I had a Fiat 500 many years ago, great little car and incredibly economical. It hardly used any petrol to get anywhere and it seldom used any at all to get back because I usually made the return journey on the back of an AA truck. We went to Cheddar for a run one day and, true to form, the car wouldn't start for the journey home. We tried to get a bed and breakfast but because we were young and didn't have any luggage, the landlady wouldn't give us a room - even though my wife showed her her wedding ring! Ah, how times have changed lol. We spent the night in the car and I can testify that there isn't much room or comfort in the old Fiat. The next morning we managed to find a garage to get the car going and headed home. I stopped at the Severn Bridge and, leaving the engine running, I nipped in and joined the AA sharpish. I was their best (or worst) customer during my ownership of that car. It was cute to look at though. image.jpg

Sadly that's an age thing too Not that I'm old - well not what I consider to be old!

Also, that's what mirrors are for, but lots of people don't/won't use them.
I only do what the voices in my wife’s head tell me to do!

Or, in the case of a Stag (judging from some of the posts about wing mirrors here) simply can't!

What I found difficult is to turn one's head at a junction when the roads intersect at an acute angle. Near to me in Basildon the planners did just that to slip roads onto a couple of roundabouts near the A127 turn off. Drivers have been complaining of them ever since.

The original Mini is a lot smaller externally than the new ones.
                        Seen them side by side.

                        I remember seeing a motoring right-up of a Lotus Elan and a Mazda MX5.
On the pic, the Lotus was a lot smaller.

                        NCAP!!

                          Hi Peter

If you think the Stag looks small compared to modern cars, then consider how our GT6 appears in modern traffic!

                          Cheers

BMW should be done under trade descriptions for calling the new car the Mini. This model should have been named the Ugly!
