What's your preferred method of balancing Strombergs. After a tube in the ear all seems fine but I do like the thought of a more accurate gauge . Does the cheap looking gunsons ones work or do I need to invest in something more fancy .

I set them up by ear then use a Gunsons "Carbalancer" thingy to double check, usually spot on. And yes, the Gunsons thing is very primitive, it only works if you are very careful to hold it plumb vertical.
I use the same as Ian too - it is useless for doing the Alvis but for my Stag, Vitesse 2 litre and MGB it works a treat. You can't use it on 2"SUs unless you build the cone up with tape so for E types it is useless (and I use a lot of tape because of it)
My "glass" pops out a little too readily but there you go.
Will eventually replace the Crypton Synchrocheck that some scrotum stole from my toolbox while I was on holiday years ago, but the current ebay prices on secondhand ones are stupidly high and you never know if they have been dropped and fooked until you get it in the post...
