    Rumbling

I have been using my Stag for months now with the roof up and when bored, have found myself being critical of the car and looking to sort out niggling problems / improvements.

However, I have a rumbling sound coming from the rear of the car at all speeds above say 15mph in any gear. It is road speed related and mainly shows up in 2nd gear. It is there even neutral going along and it most evident on acceleration and deceleration. It feels like a rumble and as if you are going over a rough surface. If I accelerate in 2nd, there is a rhythmic drone which I believe is called mangle.

The prop is a solid type with normal u/j's.
    Drive shaft are modified GKN's.
Diff has a reinforced nose cone fitted

Open top you wouldn't hear it. As a driver, you May feel it through the drivers seat.

Can't look at car until the weekend but initial thoughts appreciated
    Thanks
    Andrew

Interesting, thanks guys. I have grabbed the rear of the prop and there doesn't seem to be any up or down play, so ruled this out.
Nit sure how to test rear bearing as can't soin wheel to hear a dry bearing and being the bearing isn't tappered, I presume there wouldn't be any play

If you have a non C/V prop it should have a sliding spline near the gearbox end. Sometimes it seizes. Make sure there is movement.

Andrew I wouldn't rule out a front wheel bearing. When I first got my Stag I had a noise similar to what you describe and spent ages checking out the back end, I was convinced it was the diff, in the end I found it was the offside front wheel bearing. Wheel bearing noise never seems to come from the offending corner in my experience, either that or there is something wrong with my hearing

Clearance around the exhausts where they pass through the rear sub-frame arms?

You're right Roger, it could be something I can hear from the front but I can feel it through the rear of the car.

Yep - that would be my best bet.

i would side with Roger and have had the same issue. Swore it was the gearbox or diff about to drop off as the wheel bearings on the front were only a couple of months old. Problem was a totally, and I mean absolutely kn***ered front near side wheel bearing. Replaced with LD Parts bearing and abracadabra - cured instantly.

Thanks Ian, will do. Interesting that it can transmit through the car.
