    rear wheel hub bearing

    Good morning members it nice to be back up and run again.how ever I have a problem I hope a member are members can give me some advice
    on how to go about renewing the rear wheel hub bearing on my 1972 stag,I have changed quite a few over the last 30 year but never one on a stag.
    In the stag manual it states I need a press which I have access to but the large spanner for the large nuts and the dial gauge I do not have ,So I would
    be please if any member as carried out this work and how they went about it.Your advice please.

    Unfortunately, this is a job that can need a very powerful press - I think some people have failed with 30 ton presses

    If you do a search on here you should be able too find reports from those who have done it - you may find it easier to replace the complete hub.

      Jim,

      Have a look in the Technical Section. Ian (Milothedog) has posted an excellent document on rear hub bearing replacement, and has offered the scanners for loan.

        Jim, pm if you need any info, I'll give you my number. I am happy to loan out the tools and only ask the postage is covered for sending and returning them. if you want to do this I will let you know the weight of the items.

        Julian, I think the issues with people not being able to separate them is more down to not using the strengthening plate that Steve (Muffin man) came up with. This stops the hub flange defecting under pressure and pinching the taper, just like the factory tool did.


        And if you do, do it, get Timken bearings, don't use anything else and especially not the Chinese ones. I found out the hard way

          i took the easy, but expensive, way out and changed the whole assemby.

            So did I, and I'm using these when they arriveuntitled (47).png

            Decided to go with the CV conversion also

            Which will stop any of the Stag twitch and sliding joint wear and will be fit and forget items now for many future years.

                  Dunno, I either haven't read it yet or missed it. They are from Classic Driving Developments and some other owners I've researched who've fitted them (including TR owners so they've been "sticking" them) report that they fit well and just work with no drama.

                    Ok. I just happened to notice the ad from SC Parts Group on p59 of the latest mag (Feb). First time I've seen this firm advertising them for the Stag, although they've done them for TRs for a few years.

                      I decided that rather than use the original Triumph designed hubs (even new ones) with it's hub bearing replacement difficulties, buying these newly made hubs with the problems designed out was the way to go.



                      Add on the new CV driveshafts with the hubs for an all in price of £950 inc VAT and it seems it's not worth replacing with original equipment hubs and sliding driveshafts even if Rilsan coated.

                        I was waiting to see this mentioned on the forum after seeing the advert . At present it's the only area I haven't renewed and something I will upgrade too when the time comes . It also shows the magazine does get to some without the forum . What a great feature . So whoever fits this item could take lots of pictures and get it published in the soc magazine .
