    Here's where the fun starts!?

    Hello again, having successfully found my 1st stag via my search on the forum a few months back, I am now in the process of starting on my list of tasks, and now looking for some help (apologies in advance for all the questions)

    The car is a 1978 MK2 with a standard TV8, with electronic ignition, has MOT and drives (or did drive!) OK no major issues at present, but my first problem now is that the car refuses to idle, starting from cold with choke, car will make a reluctant start and then just dies seconds later, on further attempts to start the car refuses to turnover!? shows signs of weak battery. Following charging battery repeat of previous happens. I have tried to hold onto revs to keep running but just fades and stops again

    Any ideas.. battery not holding charge? coil fault? or a fuel issue? any suggestions appreciated.

    Other non related things I have found while pocking a round, no air intake hose from manifold, do I need one?
    Fuel interia switch present but not connected, and no sign of connecter, yet again do I need it?

    Having also bought a set of new coolant hoses to be fitted, thinking about getting a header tank, any suggestions? I have seen the threads on Stagweber kit and seems the obvious choice, what about alternative plastic bottle kits or make-up own?

    Probably the first of many callouts, and all help appreciated.

    Hi Lee, a word of advice - DON't ask about header tanks!!!

        if it's not turning over then the battery sounds like it's flat? a couple of simple tests with a multimeter will determine that and/of if the alternator is duff.. the hot air pipe from exhaust will help the engine warm up quicker which is a good thing especially in winter.

        I have one of the Stagweber kits and for the money it's superb! and piece of mind too if money is tight then there's nothing wrong with one of the plastic headers from various cars (it's been covered any times so do a search)

        inertia switch is not so much an issue but if you're ever involved in an accident the insurance company might start poking around and ask why it's been disconnected..

          All I have to say (well at the moment) Why spend shed loads of money when plenty of manufactures have already developed/produced header tanks that are perfectly adequate and easily adaptable.(poke around in the local breakers or Ebay ) lots of advice on suitable ones. The first check it sounds like you need to do is pull off the fuel pipe put a receptacle under it and get someone to turn on the ign and see if you have fuel coming up. The inertia switch should be installed ( could also affect your insurance) The hot air pipe from the manifold aids in the warming up process but wont affect starting or hot running. Hope this stops you spending pots of money. Graham

              The hot air pipe does not help the engine to warm up it supplies warm air to the carbs to help gas the fuel so the engine runs better when warming up. I don't have one but then again I don't need it.

                        Oh boy...
                        I'm not 100% sure about the hot air pipe. I know its supposed to send hot air into the air box. But how do we know its working. When l start the car it must use the ambient temperature before the exhaust gets hot. Should l notice a difference ?

                              it's a hot air pipe and it helps with cold running, that's all you need to know and there's no need to start a header tank thread type war..
