My 18yr old daughter passed her driving test today...

Luckily the car she'll drive is disposable.... well it is an MG with a special needs gearbox....

Whilst I am very pleased to see an 18 year old and from the video competent driver I must ask the question as to how you got her insured?

I have been a classic car owner for donks ! I have 4 sons.

No classic car insurer I have used (Footman James, Heritage, etc.) would contemplate any driver under 25?

Putting the two younger of these at then aged under 25 was possible on my wifes Vauxhall Astra policy but at a significantly increased premium.

Gent? He probably just wanted to make sure she came back safe before he risked it. A classic MGB as a first car, lucky girl. I'm getting old - when I passed my test MGB's were still in production. I think you're wise not trusting a Vitesse to an 18 year old boy. When Matthew was fifteen I took a Vitesse convertible as payment for a job I did with the intention of keeping it until he could drive. It was just driven back and fore on the drive for two years as I'm paraplegic (not paralytic, except sometimes) so can only drive automatics. When he was seventeen I panicked, sold it and bought him a Mini instead. He had great fun in that but we both regret not keeping the Vitesse now.
      Sleepless night ahead for you!

Well done Hannah - and well done Russ, I'm sure you helped her to pass.

How on earth did you become involved in reshelling an XM though

        Cheers

in the latter days of my firm, we had not only the Rover Group branch, but a Vauxhall and a Citroën branch too - as ours was the biggest plot we also had the body and paint shop. The XM was a victim of a shell bender when it was 2 weeks old so their insurance went for a reshell - wot an effing orrible job that, because I was works and bodyshop foreman, I ended taking a VERY active part in...

Nearly walked out twice over it

It was scary enough teaching my son to drive a couple of years back but he took instructions fairly well, whereas my daughter already knows everything !
MG looks a lovely motor too
              Cheers Glyn

That knitted crash helmet looks neat! Is it Kevlar?
                The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

I really enjoyed the clip cheers russ. My dad had a Mbgt and a midget which I learnt to drive in . Mostly in the grounds of British aerospace when the strikes were on in the 80s and I was about 14 .I might let my daughters have a drive in the stag but in a big open space.

                      I think that's marvellous.

It takes a lot of courage to drive an old car so soon after learning to drive in (I assume) a more modern car.

                      You should be very proud.

Lovely video! Hope she enjoys the car! I hope you don't mind my asking, is the Auto box a custom fit? I didn't think the B had this as an option, even across the pond?

The slush box was a factory fit - as far as I can tell it was available as an option between 1967 and 1972, but only 432 were built with that transmission, and most were export and mainly GTs.

An ex Stag owning pal who used to be on this forum, Mad Cyclist, has a white BGT with the same spec. Funnily enough, it does accelerate quite well for a B, but it was always a pain when idling in D or R - MGB idle is never great but with an auto hung on it you either get frequent stalling or with a higher idle thumping into gear and running on. This car has been in the immediate family since 1975 but only recently when I knew Hannah was going to share it with my wife I thought it needed sorting... I dug through my SU spares and found a pair of new 100 thou jets without capstat instead of the 90 thou standard, and experimented with needles - it now runs on V8 Rover needles and has a much smoother idle with no issues higher up and no discernable mpg penalty.

Some spares for the car can be difficult to find... auto brake pedal rubbers in particular, but gear selector parts too..
