What's the highest number of owners of one stag?

Just pulled out some paperwork on my stag WCB 30l , to see if I could put aluminium black and white plates on her. I knew she had a lot of owners before me , she's a 73 . The first owner kept her two years. And the last keeper (me) have had her for 24 years. And she will be 42 years young in July. In total she has had no less than 15 owners . That means that over her time she has had a new owner every 2.8 years. If you don't include my 24 years of ownership she has changed hands every 1.28 years what a hussy or was she just misunderstood. Who else has a high number of owners for their stag.

Mine is a 1976 with 8 keepers prior to me, the last one had it 24 years and averages 815 miles per year !!! so that means between 1976 and 1990 it had 7 keepers, one every 2 years.

But bear in mind some of the registered keepers may have been dealers who took the car in part exchange or bought it for stock, although dealers tried not to put their names on the registration document as it added to the total "owners" which sometimes put prospective buyers off. Previous keepers shown on the document were limited to the last one, keepers prior to that would only be divulged by the DVLA in exceptional cases such as potential fraud, mileage discrepancy etc.

Being a "Registered Keeper" does not prove ownership of the vehicle, it means the registered keeper will usually be regarded as responsible for parking tickets, speeding, etc.

        Hi Michael

My Stag was first registered 12 October 1973 and is an 'M' registration

It has had six owners including me.

The first owner kept the car for 1,484 days, 2nd owner for 8,253 days, 3rd for 2,525 days, 4th for 454 days, 5th for 1,312 days and me, the 6th owner, for 1,080 days and counting.

Yes, I know, I need to get out more.

To make it worse, I have plotted the owners on a map to see how the car's home has moved over the last 42 years (OMG !!)

On a side note, I believe that all cars registered after 1 January 1973 have to have the yellow/white plates.

However, in 1973 our next door neighbour (a vicar) ignored the new law and fitted the pre-1973 plates to his Hillman as he didn't think it was fair to give Plod a better chance at reading his number plates should he be 'flexing' any motor related laws. He wasn't your average vicar !!

As a result, and knowing that I have the Almighty on my side, I have the aluminium and black plates on my car.

Interestingly, the ParkingEye Automatic Number Plate Recognition (APNR) system at the local Sainsburys cannot read the old style plates.
Sadly there's a five hour allowance to stay in this car park and there's no way I can stay in a Sainsburys for over five hours and so, I cannot take advantage of this fact.
Don't know whether the Average Speed Cameras etc have the same problem reading these plates

        Best regards

        Paul

Download V888 from DVLA and send it of with £5 and you can get copies of all the ownership transfers to add to the car's history file.

Hi, (Always wanted a stag ) I thought it was the manufacturing dates they worked from how can I find that out. I just think the alli plates give it a bit more of a Vintage look and 1973 was a particularly good year . When I bought the car it was white , a friend of mine said that the car had a lot of paint on it. When I stripped the White I found a funky metallic purple and then under that sienna brown , it's now white again.

My 'P' reg is now on its 8th owner (me).

Some of these cars are 45 years old so it wouldn't surprise me if a few were into the twenties in terms of ownership.

What I'd really like to know is how many Stags there are with just ONE owner.

                      Hi Michael.

                      I think you are right

                      Wikipedia states:

Older British plates had white, grey or silver characters on a black background. This style of plate was phased out in 1972, and is now legal to be carried only on vehicles first registered before 1 January 1973. A vehicle which was first registered on or after 1 January 1973 shall be treated as if it was first registered before that date if it was constructed before 1 January 1973.

You can get a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust 'Dating Letter' or a 'Certified Copy Of A Factory Record' which will give a 'Date of Build'.

Mine is shown as 31 August 1973 and so, I definitely do not qualify.

But as I ALWAYS observe all other rules of the road - speed limits etc, I feel I can flex the rule on number plates.

                      Best wishes

Just had to dig out my V5 as couldn't remember how many owners - 2 previous ! Mines a MK1 '72 on a K plate. I acquired the Stag on 14th May 1980. However, it was last on the road back in 1988 and sits as a shell in my present garage still awaiting time and money to resurrect the stalled restoration. At this rate it will be my retirement project!

It might be interesting to do a poll, might show what the average is?

Yes, but as the yellow/white plates were introduced in the late 60s it is likely that almost every Stag would have been fitted with them from new. Can you imagine a proud new owner buying Triumph's flagship model and asking for old fashioned plates to be fitted?
