    Access to seat adjustment

    Hi

I am working down the list of "minor" defects on my Stag and have come across a "catch 22" type problem.

The drivers seat adjustment is jammed. The seat is stuck at a reasonable position for me to drive but the car is actually my wifes and she is looking forward to driving it in the spring. Also I believe it is a MOT requirement that the back/forth adjustment works? (Can only assume that last July the PO's MOT tester was of similar build to me. The 2 testers at my classic freindly local garage are respectively 5'6 and 6'3!)

Searching on here and reading the manual it appears this mechanism can only be accessed by removing the seat but to do this one has to move the seat back and forth to gain access to the mounting bolts.

But as the seat is jammed I can't do this.

Is it possible to remove the squab to gain access to the mechanism from above in situ?

I have the same issue on the passenger seat of SWMBO's TR7. You have to be able to slide the seat to access the mounting bolts. I am treating that with regular small doses of plus gas and then when its had a good soak I am going to try a drift to get some movement and hopefully free it up that way, I can't see a simpler way.

      Thanks for your sympathy Ian!

I cannot see however how to get Plus Gas/ WD40 etc onto mechanism without risk of soaking and thus ruining seat foam.

I think there is enough space under the seat to reach under and use a paint brush soaked in your chosen releasing fluid to paint on the adjuster. If you keep, doing that for a few days I am sure it would start to move.

The seat base is fixed to the sliding part with four (1/2" ?) headed bolts that point outwards. Whether these can be easily accessed from underneath or not I'm really not sure as I've always had the seats out when I've removed these.

However, if you can contort yourself into the front and rear footwells then I would have thought you could just about see enough under the seat to get to these bolts or to get some Plus Gas onto the runners, rather than the seat foam.

Also bear in mind that the seat can be heightened slightly with the knob on the front of the seat which will assist access a little bit.

          Cheers

Sparingly! You only need to get it into the sliding part of the runner and that is below the squab, wd40 with the straw in will help, if the wd40 nozzle will fit the plus gas can (I don't yet know if it will) then use plus gas. You have room on the stag to get a drift onto the rear of the runner so a little tap each way is possible. I am not sure I'll have the luxury of getting access to the rear of the runner on the TR as there are no back seats and the seat is jammed almost fully back! :-(

Even when it is working properly it only makes a little difference after about forty odd turns of the knob - it's pretty much a waste of space but it still might give you an extra inch or so. Be aware though that it only raises the rear and so tips the seat, fractionally, forwards.

                  Cheers

yes mine appear to do nothing on first use, but if you are patient and wind the handle a lot it does eventually raise the front of the seat by about an inch IIRC, but for a long time I thought mine didn't work as the movement is so small and so slow!

Thanks guys. To save me 80 or even 120 turns which way is up please ? Clockwise or anti-clockwise viewed from front of seat?

I think it raises or lowers the rear but if you start with the rear in its highest position and then lower it, maybe it give the impression that you're raising the front - even if you're not
