    Transmission Fluid Type

I have just bought 5 Litres of Dexron 11d transmission fluid from Euro Car Parts. Reading this forum dexron is a big no no for my BG65. So I can exchange it, does anyone know which of the products from Euro Car Parts best fills the bill. (well the transmission really)

I don't think they sell an appropriate type so get a refund.

Have a look here for what you need:

Thanks for that. At least I found out before I put it in.

Ian I have just filled my 35 with a Dexron type after an engine out respray I have not turned the engine or box over since the fill will it be ok to drain and refill with the recommended commaAQF or will it need further cleansing. I have no history regarding gearbox rebuilds. so much for motor factor recommendations.

        Regards Peter

Peter, if you haven't started it then just drain it down and refill with the correct fluid. If you had run it you would have mixed it with the contents of the TC, but seeing as you haven't then like I said it should all just drain out.

          Ian.

I am very glad that my mistake alerted you to the problem Peter, before starting it. There really are some very helpful people on this forum for a newbie like me. Just off to get my refund.

As a slight aside, I've been putting Dexron 11d in my power steering (only because I had a bottle of it lying around).
Is it a suitable application here?

              Cheers, Mark

Shouldn't be a problem, it's just working as a hydraulic oil. Dexron fluids are not compatible with the friction materials in BW boxes, hence why you don't use it unless the re builder specifies it.

And even then as Russ has pointed out before, make sure you have that in writing

                Ian.

                  Cheers Ian.
Until I get the leak sorted I was keen to use up what I had lying around!

Thanks Ian it might have cost Double to fill the box but you have saved me a potential rebuild, who says this forum is not good value not me Thanks again.

Do not assume if the container does not expressly state Dexron that it is not Dexron. Check the specification online. On these threads there is a Ford specification which is often quoted on the right fluid.

Can you expand on that? are you saying that one is not suitable. As far as I'm aware the ford C3 and C4 autoboxes use a similar spec oil as a BW of the same period.

Both oils I listed are Type G, mineral based. and both are quoted by the manufacture as meeting the BW requirements.

                        Ian.

Topped up my Volvo power steering with red ATF then asked main dealer and they say it's wrong, it has to be green mineral and cannot be mixed as incompatible, bit like men and women really.

So now have to drain the rack and refill, just hope no damage has been done although there is a very bad leak somewhere and the seals may have been damaged.
I only do what the voices in my wife’s head tell me to do!

A quick look Jeff suggest it's a synthetic fluid you need, isn't it still under warranty for the leak. You've not had it 3 months yet, have you. Just don't mention you topped it with ATF, buy a bottle of the green stuff and tell them that's what you have topping it up with.

                            Ian.
