    Speedo wobble

    Hi all
Got a new seedo from Stoneleigh yesterday, a 2.5 pi one as my stag has a 3.4 diff, bargain £25 brand new!
The sppedo has always had the famous stag fick on the speedo despite a new cable fittedwhen i got the car.
Ran the speedo up on a drill, and rock steady, put it in the car, and its all over the place, worse than the old one.
IIRC, the replaicment cable was a little shorter than the original one, bought from a stag supplier, (BW 35 box).
So, just ordered one from LD. Has anyone else had a problem with cables???

Is it routed correctly Dave, you need to ensure it doesn't make any tight turns between the G/box. and Speedo head. You could also try putting a drop of oil in it from the top end. You may need to get it vertical though to do that and make up a little makeshift funnel so you can leave it to find it's way down the whole length of the cable.

      Hi ian
No sharp turns, and i oiled it with ep90 gear oil, so totally confused. If i hold the cable and gently kink it whilst moving ( not easy!) it tends to reduce the wavering, so, faulty cable, wound incorrectly?????? I cant remember if the cables are wound a different way for anti clockwise rotation.

Maybe the Squares on the ends of the inner cable are a bit worn (Slipping) or the drive in the Box? You say the speedo is new but is the square in that the same size ?

Yup, the cable ends are good.
I will pull the drive out of the box to check it.
          Cheers

Probably a bad cable. To confirm, try spinning up the speedo with cable connected.

My speedo used to get confused about its role - above about 50mph, it thought it was the windscreen wiper! I replaced inner cable only - no improvement. Replaced complete cable - steady as a rock.

I had the same problem , mine was routed wrong at the gearbox end
Try with a different route at the gearbox end , and make sure the connector in the angle drive ist worn
                Hope this helps

                  Thanks for all the ideas.
I give them all a try and let you know.

Dave, I personally think EP90 oil is too heavy and sticky for a speedo cable, try something a lot lighter in any new cable you fit, that alone could be giving you this issue.

                        All sorted
New cable from LD was longer (about6") and allowed proper fitment without any kinks.
Why oh why do we put up with c--p parts from suppliers who should do the research and supply the correct bit in the first place. Thanks LD, I will be getting more parts from them in the future. ( no connection with them, just happy customer)

Always a good source of parts and advice. Peter is excellent and very knowledgeable - and like a couple (but not all) of other traders - drives a Stag
Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't
