We had a Tahiti Blue one with us with a hard top on. Was it that colour? We all more or less travelled back individually so we wouldn't have picked up anyone who had difficulties on the way home.

            Steve,

Definitely one of ours I'm afraid - poor Andy and family. We left him and family on the beach as they were going to stay on a little while longer before heading home.

Had to call out the recovery to get them home - but they made it safely in the end. Speaking with Andy this evening, he is still trying to diagnose the problem.

Car appeared to be overheating slightly, but after a rest, it cooled down again and didn't get hot again - may have just been pushing it a little.

Actual breakdownconsisted of engine just stopping and car coasting to the hard shoulder- no spluttering, no bangs. Appears to have both fuel and spark, just doesn't want to fire. Any thoughts...? Andy says it is as if the timing has 'jumped' and is now wildly out. First thing he is going to check.

He's going to log in to this forum as he hasn't used it before - sure he will appreciate any suggestions anyone may have...

When mine broke down it had similar symptoms, apart from the overheating bit, One of the lugs that holds the upper distributor base plate down had snapped off causing the points to close up and not open properly.

If it is on electronic ignition it could be that the electronics got too hot and expired.

I have also heard of the roll pin that lives somewhere on the bottom of the distribtor shaft breaking causing the gear at the bottom to go out of alignment.

Apparently the jackshaft turns as the distributor does, and he says the rotor lines up on no2 lead at tdc which makes me feel that it's not the left bank in trouble - it does pop and bang out of the inlets when cranked, and easy-start makes for more noise, so having spoken to Andy tonight my guess is the RH cam has slipped.... apparently he was running on virtually zero oil pressure when it all stopped, and it had apparently got a bit warm earlier so it may have nipped a cam in the head due to lack of oil flowto start it all off.....possibly....and the chain had a wobbly. Andy said the chains were quiet from cold, but as that was the only time it developed any real oil pressure...

He's going to whip off the cam covers and let me know what he finds. I have offered guidance when he does his rebuild and he's only 15 minutes away, so we'll see what transpires......
