" Spraying Stone chip Guard"

Hi Guys, Having never sprayed stone chip before, and for that matter never used a spray gun, just would like to ask a couple of questions, that may also help others like myself with no experience of this skill.


I have purchased a" fast mover" under body coating gun to which I have attached "White" TETROSYL stone chip, and borrowed a friends small compressor.
have been trying spraying it at different pressures within the recommendations on cardboard sheets. 4.4-5 bar seems best?

Questions:-

1. what pressure did you decide on?
2. what is the best thickness to spray it ?
3. Do you spray one coat or a couple of coats ?
4. Is there anything else that I should be aware of or know?

I sprayed first a very light dusting and let it vent for 10 minutes or so to avoid having too much active solvent on the primer at any one time. Thereafter a coat which wasn't too thick as it starts to run. You sort of get a feeling fairly quickly when the coat is thick eenough to have a uniform coverage with a regualr mottled pattern and no runs. The rest is in the data sheet attached

I found the tetrosyl product to be a pit poor - I ended up using a normfest one which we sell much nicer finish and came theough the gun better too.

I tried various settings with the gun and pressures to get the finish I wanted but frankly the best stuff out of all of them I tried was upol gravitex
goes on well dries quickly and gives a great finish. If you primer over this you can flat back and a get a perfectly smooth finish if required.
I still have tins of the others in the garage which were rubbish and gave a poor finish. Expensive mistake but I wasn't to know until trying I guess!

another vote for Gravitex, Tetrosyl stuff is crap to be honest! last time I used Tetrosyl stonechip it reacted with other paints but Gravitex was fine and better finish too!

that's why you spray on a light mist coat first and allow the solvent carrier to evaporate (as it does very quickly) before applying the end coat(s). One person's "reacting with the undercoat" is another person's "bonding with the undercoat". Anyway, each to his own preference. I've used Tetrosyl for over 20 years and it does it for me, although it was always the "industrial" version for use with the proper application gun. Have to agree that the the off-the-shelf one in a spray can from the car accessory store wasn't even comparable.

I've tried a lot of products over the years and just reporting my findings, in general I find all Upol products superior to Tetrosyl, these are just my findings and nothing else! I always start with a dust coat with any type of paint (except barcoat types).

Totally agree with Mark I had the same despite "careful application"
I have done a fair amount of paintwork over the last 35 years!

top coat cracked I even discussed with the paint shop locally who told me they don't use it for the same reason and they recommended the upol product. ( a few years back now) and it's not a spray can off the shelf either, for information that is used, its the body shop version

i should have sent it back but I think I still have it if you want it Drew

Just be careful when swopping between cans, I bought some and the can was slightly shorter than normal so the pick up pipe on my gun was touching the bottom of the can, took me a while to suss out what was wrong and got an eyeful of stone chip paint in the process.

I used some stone chip guard out of a tin last year and it was useless, looked just like ordinary paint but cost a lot more.

Hi Mark and others, I think I have the same reaction that you had, but it seems only on the seam sealer?.

Removed under seal, cleaned all spots off with white sprit, painted body with rust buster 121 mastic, brushed on, a few brush marks but ok, used Final systems brushable seam sealer FL2007/1, sprayed with white chip guard Tetrosyl 9 days later, resulting in a reaction.


Will it dry?, what is the next step?

I had the same trouble with (I Think) upol seam sealer and Hammerite. I gave up and rightly or wrongly used Hammerite on its own.
