    Thermic sensor buzzing

    Hi

Does anyone know if the thermic sensor on a MK2 should make a buzzing noise? I'm still trying to cure the occasional bout of jerkiness and noticed tonight that after 30 secs or so of idling (hot) the thermic sensor started to buzz. It sounds like a fly is trapped in it! Is this normal? Getting a little desperate now as I have renewed or checked most other things:X

    Many thanks

Pinch off the pipe running to the flap actuator - does it still buzz? I personally have blanked off the vac pipe on the manifold on mine, as the standard fitment thermac valve is far from effective, and prone to leaking in too much air, causingpoor running near idle.

I haven't really noticed much difference over the past year, it still starts the same on full choke, reduced to 1/4 as soon as it's running, completely off as soon as it's rolling and used as neccesary at junctions to keep running for the first 5 mins. I've dumped the hot air pipe too as it was just in the way.

As mine is doing just on 30mpg and is an auto, with idle CO of 3.2%I feel I'm vindicated in disposing of a primitive system and getting a better idle as a consequence.... I might try a later valve from a non-injected Montego or similaras they actually work and don't bleed air into the manifold, if I trip over one somewhere on my travels......

In laymans terms it is the thingy in the wotsit where the air comes into the air filter

                        Hi Russ and John

Russ - thanks for replying. I have squeezed the pipe and the sensor stops buzzing straight away. I could swear idling is smoother too.Did youjust blank off the vac pipe from the manifold? If I do this, do I need to do anything with the temperature compensator? As the car is running rough at 1500 rpm (always in a 30 limit) I hope I have found the problem!! Could have trouble finding a new one though as nobody seems to have them. Many thanks!

John - no, my avatar pic was taken on the North Yorkshire Moors in the Summer (the one we didn't have!). We spent a week touring in the Stag and this is one of the three days when the hood was down!!

                        Regards

Just stick a small bolt in the rubber pipe from the manifold and leave the rest in place. You shouldn't need to do a thing with the compensators, but you may find you can lean your carbs off 1/2 turn and gain a bit more economy into the bargain as well as cleaner low end running... the thermac system is a very effective, built-in, manifold air leak!

Good thermac valves and actuators are a bit thin on the ground - so why bother if your engine is happy? Our climate isn't severe enough to warrant the system which was fitted to cope with far harder winters...... long live global warming??

                            Russ,

Ihad my car checked out by one of the Tune-Up guys at National Day. Hefound that this valve was leaking. He pulled the pipe from the valve on the top of the intake and stuffed a tight-fitting ball bearing into it, then replaced the pipe. Sealed the leak but it still looks standard.

                              Hi Russ

Many thanks for the reply. I'm going to block the pipe off at the weekend as you suggest and see what happens - I really hope that this actually does turn out to be the cause of the occaisonal jerkinesss. Fingers (and anything else) crossed! I will be glad to be rid of te demented fly impression if nothing else

                              regards
