    Horn

Having just booked the Stag in for a MOT retest this Saturday afterreplacing the inter trackrod ends and steering column bearingsI find last night that the horn is now not working.

Well I say not working it tries but all I get is a pip pip. Can anyone advise is it going to be the horn push or the relay and if it's the relay is it one I can get from Halfords or a motor factors?

Before you go down that route, get somebody to press the horn switch and give the horn a light tap with a hammer, worth a try.

Ahhhhh - percussive maintenance.... my favourite

If you are getting some sort of noise, even if it's just a pip pip type, then the odds are the rest of the circuit is intact and just the horn itself is duff - stick a light bulb across the terminals - if it lights when you press the horn push then it confirms horn failure.

I recall a similar problem on a Vitesse a few years back and I was able to coax the horn back into life by adjusting one of the screws on top of the horn. Iguess there is some sort of vibrating contact in there that can close or open up with time.

Guess that has the same effect as tapping it with a hammer

            Thanks Tim

No - that adjusts the contact gap on the Tesla coil type exciter - the hammer is gratuitous violence:dude:

My horns have performed exactly this trick. I gave them a tap (!) and they worked for a while but tried them today and they have stopped working againLooks like its a trip to Paddocks!

Had a similar problem recently: http://stagownersclub.mywowbb.com/forum1/2421.html

I ended up buying a pair from the local car accessories shop. They look very similar to the original, but they don't sound so mellow.

Recently someone posted a link to the DVLA where you can checka car'sMOT history. I did this and found that at the last MOT my car failed first time around. Why? No horn! Strange that the previous owner didn't pass over the copy of the fail cert :?.

Well I set about it last night hammer and test light in hand, first problem only one horn!!!. The bottom one had been removedso just the one to check out.

Contacted the test lamp and sure enough there was light, therefore circuit and relay must be ok. Thanks Russ

Then triedtapping with the hammer but no joy sorry Bob

So look like it's off to Halfords after the work to see what they have toget me through the MOT on Saturday

I think that the contacts of the coil circuit corrode due to infrequent use ( I think the Italians wear them out ). Turning the adjustment screw generally gets them going again. However, the purpose of the screw is to the "tune" the horn to the correct note. I had a Volvo years ago and the manual actuallyspecifiedthe correct notes for the two tone horns! If you tamper with the screw and get them wrong you can get a horrible dischordant noise. I think the correct term is that they should be harmonious. The only way to reset them, as I see it , is to hold the horn button down and play with the screws but it does relyupon your neighbours being totally deaf or away on holiday. Otherwise do it in a field!
