    Starter Soleniod

Following on from my "hard to start when hot thread" where I find I am not getting the 12v feed from the small terminal to the coil, I today attempted the nightmare job of trying to remove the starter motor, some idiot obviously doesn't want the thing falling off so I gave up trying to undo the top nut, having a free flow exhaust system restricts any access from above, so I took the solenoid off instead.

I tried taking the solenoid apart, but despite removing the two screws and even the nuts, though the top felt loose, it didn't want to come off.
Reading the manual it says this is a specialist job and to just replace the solenoid.
LD spares only list one for a Mondeo, does this indicate they are unobtainable?
Besides which, can I still use my old copper internal tube as to replace that does involve taking the starter off.
Also, should that copper tube be lubricated with anything?

    Open to ideas.

when I took my starter apart I just greased the copper tube in the solenoid.. one thing I could find is a replacement rubber boot so just fitted it without! I don't plan on using the car in heavy rain anyway so shouldn't be too much of an issue..

It is possible to remove the top from the old solenoid with a high powered soldering iron, the top is held onto the solenoid coil by the two dollops of solder on the cap. You have to melt one at a time and keep easing the cap off. Once removed it is normally just a matter of cleaning up the internal contacts then soldering it back together again, then replacing the screws.

I have never seen any form of lubrication on the plunger of any solenoid I have removed, so I just make sure they are clean and dry before reassembly.

Just seen this on e-bay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRIUMPH-TR...item486cae45fb
Looks right but worried about the part numbers, all I can see on mine is 1874 and 76884E
          Any ideas?

Hi Nambo, When I took my starter motor off, I only reached the top bolt by linking all my socket extensions together and feeding them through under and behind the manifold with the ratchet out in front of the timing case. Good Luck.

+1 for that. Looks impossible till you set this up, then it's easy.

Had a solenoid issue on mine, after searching for one on ebay and other suppliers to find the correct one at reasonable price I took the complete unit to local auto electrician who fitted a new one and checked motor brushes al for £40 and guarantee for 12 months.

Removed starter using extension bars as previously described, I had read the method on the forum Technical Section by the Flying Farmer.
