    timing chains!!!!!!

Hi all, think I'm a bit paranoid........????
I have started to drive my Stag now the weather is better!! Fantastic I love it!
Since I have been driving it I have changed the oil and filter and now the engine seems a little rattly from around the front near the timing chains!!!!
I used the 20/50 from Halfords which had great reviews
I may be just a little paranoid but I would like someone with some knowledge to have a listen?
Any ideas?? I live in Torquay Devon, your help is much appreciated.

It may Pay you to take a little drive over to A M Restorations in Plymouth, I am sure he would listen to it and tell you what's what, and put your mind at rest or not, unless their is someone looking in who is closer?

Could be alternator bearings on the way out as well. they make a very similar noise. Taking off the belt will prove / disprove that. Although it doesn't sound like a rattle its also worth checking the tips of the fan blades are not hitting the clip on the bottom hose. And a noise can emanate from a tired Viscous fan coupling.

          Ian.

Ian is, of course, quite right. Over the years I've had all three of the noises he describes and, each time, I've feared the worst, but been pleasantly surprised to find the solution was quite simple

            Cheers

Tony Magrie lives very close to you. He reads this forum, but rarely posts. Hopefully he will pick up on this. If not, and you don't want to risk driving it to Plympton, I may be able to escape for an hour during the week and pop down. (Not Thursday).

Thanks all for your replies.... When I bought it I was totally happy that there was no noise from the timing chains at all. It was the main thing I looked out for! All I would like is to listen to someone elses car to compare noises or maybe for someone to pop over or for me to drive to them, if its not too far!!! As if it is chain rattle I want it done asap, which leads me to where to get them done if necessary?
                Thanks again for your help.
DJT not sure how far away you are from me???

There you go, I knew Tony would be reading

Good point about Wednesday. I'll probably be there in my Stag and I expect Sue & John and others will be also. If you bring yours along we can all have a listen. Andy will be able to tell when he can fit you in if necessary and tell you how much.
