    Tax Exempt?

    Hi Guys

After reading the article in this months issue of the Owners Club Magazine (March),could someone enlighten me about VED,as I'm still not 100% sure.

My Stag was build on 24/01/1974 and registered on 25/02/1974,I have a British Motor Industry Heritage Certificate to prove this.I have just received a V11 tax reminder from Swansea informing me that the tax runs out on the 31/03/2015,and will require Tax (6 months £126 or 12 Months £230)

"My question" is my Stag now Tax Exempt as a historic vehicle.if so how do I go about registering it with Swansea,I know this must have been covered in previous threads, but I would just like confirmation.

    Cliff
    Many Thanks

Cars built before 1/1/74 can apply to DVLA Swansea, SA99 1DZ. So I think you will have to wait until the official announcement of this years roll forward (if it hasnt already been announced) before appying.

      Hi Cliff
To avoid confusion as they are some misguided views on this and it was in the budget statement that April was the date they will use
      ........
here is what the DVLA confirmed to me when I asked them for clarification on my car earlier this month
You should be Tax free in April mate well done I missed it by a few months as the build was close to registration on mine Hope this helps mate
      Cheers Glyn

I can confirm the legislation isdue to come into force on 01/04/2015.

If you are in possession of a V5CRegistration Certificate showing the date of registration as prior to 1stJanuary 1975 you can apply to change the taxation class at a Post Office. Anyapplication to change the taxation class to Historic can not be made prior to01/04/2015.

The following documentation willneed to be submitted:
      • V5C Registration Certificate
      • Valid MOT Certificate (ifapplicable)

The keeper will need to write‘Historic’ in the change to taxation class field in section 7 of the V5C andsign section 8.

If you do not have a V5CRegistration Certificate, you will still be able to obtain vehicle tax inperson at a Post Office® that deals with vehicle tax.

The following documentation willneed to be submitted:
      • V62 Application for a VehicleRegistration Certificate*
      • valid MOT Certificate (ifapplicable)

*Please note that there is a £25charge.

An updated V5C will be returnedwithin 4 weeks. If a V62 form is submitted a V5C will be returned within 6weeks.

More information on the historicvehicles taxation class can be found on information leaflet INF34 TaxingHistoric Vehicles.

Form V62 can be downloaded from www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration-certificate-v5c-log-bookor obtained from a Post Office® that deals with vehicle tax.

Thanks for posting confirmation that the change can be undertaken at the post office. I shall enjoy pottering along to our local post office on the 1st April and asking for TWO free tax road tax certificates

This whole issue raises some questions?

Why do not DVLA automatically issue a new V5C once a vehicle qualifies as historic (Computer algorithm - virtually zero admin cost)? But we have to go to the Post Office and submit our V5C that they then send off to DVLA who stick the info into their computer that then issues a new V5C.

Also why do we now have to go through the "pretend" pay VED cycle every year. They should automatically identify that a car is historic and tax exempt, and providing it has an MOT and correct insurance do nothing.?

The above observations I think would make an appreciable reduction in their admin costs.

Its called "job creation". The only way that the (un)civil servants can keep their high pension jobs.

Don't hold your breath that it will roll forward again next year as we have the general election in May. If we end up a Labour/SNP pact then taxes will probably rocket, plus it was Labour that stopped the 25 year rolling exemption. If we end up with a coalition involving the Greens then will classic cars even be allowed on the roads?

oh well here's hoping they leave it be !
just wish they would use some of it to fill a few pot holes

                          cheers Glyn

If they get in, Fred Goodwin with all his mates will get their jobs back and bleed us dry, mine you the politician's are making a good job of it, not seen many of them either pay any money back.

I've got to pay this years rent as Bruce has, next year should be ok.

                              Totally agree, a it's bonkers process !!

Let me get this right, I have to send them my V5C and MOT certificate as proof of historic status (post 1st April 2015)

They already have my date of first registration as 1st October 1974 and my MOT records are also held by them digitally. Why spend millions on computerisation if it's not then used to best effect and save £££'s through automation ?

                              On a postive note I no longer seem to need form V14 to claim the refund, apparently this is now automatic once the historic class takes effect ;

DVLA no longer accepts applications for a vehicle tax refund from customers using a V14 form. They will be rejected and returned to the customer.
