    Carb leaking

The last couple of times I've used the car I've noticed a strong smell of petrol when car is parked up in the garage. Initially thought it was the tank or breather but that all checked out OK.

Finally spotted a steady slow drip from what looks to be the base of the drivers side carbaroundthe float chamber plug, but it might just be accumulating in that area.

Any ideas what could be causing the drip?Should I be replacingdiaphragms, gaskets, o rings? I see LDpart sell a Carburettor Gasket Kit RTC1481, would that cover it?

    Thanks

    Andy

    Hi Andy,

It sounds like you need a new o-ring on the float chamber plug, had this problem earlier this year. Does'nt take long to do especially if there's two people, undo the nut holding the carbs to the pedestal and while someone lifts them slightly you'll be able to pull the plug out and fit new o-ring, remember there'll be petrol in the chamber:shock:

Andy, search the forum for Carb Overhaul Kit. There was quite a full discussion around this problem back in July. Hopefully though the o ring on the float chamber plug will be enough for you, but you could have a sticking float or needle valve.

Buy a carb service kit and renew the gasket, o ring and diagphram and all will be well again.

Afternoon's work but watch for the threads stripping due to wear, especially the central 7/16 UNC thread that hols the carbs on to the inlet manifold.

The other threads for the elbows is 5/16 UNC.

When I had a petrol leak from the float chamber plugs I found that new O ring alone did not cure the leak. The plastic plug over the years of heat etc makes it brittle and hard. The smallnibs of the plugwhich are supposed to hold the plug in and squeeze the O ring didn't do their job and petrol still leaked. You may need new plastic plugs.

My other carb leak has been the float needle leaking. A new one didn't last long. I fitted the superior Grose valve and curedit

              Hi

where do you get them from?

Anyone else tried them? Standard ones do not seem to be much good!

Just to update on fuel leak.

Ordered parts from LD Parts - great next day service.

Replaced O ring on float chamber plug, which seemed very thin but wasn't split, the plastic plug wasOK.

Then checked diaphragm which initially looked OK but on closer inspection was badly perforated around outer edge, replaced diaphragm, gasket and pedestal O ring for good measure as it was all in the parts kit - result no fuel leak.

                Cheers

                  Hi,

I bought the Grose jets from SC Parts, Crawley. Ph. 01293847200, WWW.scparts.co.uk

They cost £9.20 each plus £2.00 P&P plus VAT. Total £23.55

They came with different thickness washers which I fitted. I then adjusted the float height to compensate. The float height adjustment is covered in the W/S manual.
